Showery rain has arrived in Glenfield. Winds blustery. Have folded down the garden furniture and clothesline, charged the camping lantern and all the mobile devices. Solar panels have charged the back-up battery to 50% even in this weather, so if we get an outage my fridge, microwave, lounge lights and modem will continue to run for many hours.

I've just come back from a bit of a drive up north, took some readings with my Vavuud wind meter, a couple of the readings were averaging in the late 50's kmh with a max of 96 kmh - but readings were taken on a ridge.

edit - forgot to mention that those with android phones can download the vavuud app to see my readings

Had a peak gust of 52 km/h earlier, but the wind has dropped right off now. Average speed only 6 km/h at the moment. Patchy light rain at times the last hour or so.

And this showing what's left of her convection. Suspect she'll be declared an ex-TC for shortly...

I don't think it's any further east than the last forecast map.

Certainly dodged the bullet on this one. Yeah some severe weather even though she will track a few hundred kilometres offshore. Would have been proper mayhem if Pam had come over the top of us. A storm to admire and remember for sure.

JTWC's last track-map has her centre within 180 km of East Cape tomorrow morn. :-)

Haha fair enough Nev. Was just inferring that it would have been worse had she track DIRECTLY over the top of the North Island/ New Zealand. As you were...=)

I'm beginning to think there will be less rain than forecasted for some areas. I could be wrong here but is this storm so well organised and moving so fast that it's going to have flown by us by the time it unwraps and rains out as they do.

Yes agree scottdeb, we're lucky that she's few hundred km from most of the North Island's NE coasts.

Karen said tonight that Pam was expected to be ex-tropical at around midday tomorrow. So although TC Wilma was closer, this one looks like will it survive even further south.

Ive seen some extremely disappointing reporting and warnings out about this cyclone. The media needs to do a better job of explaining exactly which parts of New Zealand will experience cyclonic conditions, because it seems like everyone from Kaitaia to Wellington expected catastrophic wind and rain. Ive said over and over to people I know that its not going to affect anyone other than those on the east cape, if that, but news outlets keep hammering the apocalypse home. Gets me very angry. People are going to get desensitized, and then when we do have one make landfall in a populated location, nobody will be prepared.

And they keep saying "when she makes landfall" even though its bloody miles out to sea and not coming ashore anywhere.

..So, I am up north in the area first affected by it, pressure is still dropping steadily, rain is continuing, wind speed is increasing - and you're already calling it a fizzer? We haven't even got to the worst of it yet.
I drove through Whangaroa today and the tide was only a couple of inches below the road level, pretty sure that come high tide tomorrow morning after a night of rain the water will once again be over the road. I'm sure the good people up there will agree with you that " its not going to affect anyone other than those on the east cape" as they mop up the mess.

Im saying this is as close as its ever going to get to Northland and Auckland, as was forecast. What are you expecting?

Also: dont be so nitpicky. If you want to split hairs, its currently affecting everyone in the northern half of the north island. Thats not at all what I meant, and you know it.

Also 2: The rain is already letting up in Northland as the bands move away from it. Wind speeds might increase another 5-10km/h at most, before calming back down again quite quickly. This is what happens when a cyclone is 500km away, out to sea.

The High tide in the early hrs is something to watch for eastern coastal areas as it combines with wind and sea swell, could cause a few problems.

Agree with all your comments. Could have been so much worse. Not minimising any dramas that some will inevitably go through.

No, this is not what you were saying at all ... a lot of acreage between Auckland and East Cape and beyond ,,,stop digging
