Issued at: 9:09am Monday 27 Apr 2015
A front is expected to move east across the North Island this afternoon and evening, accompanied by broad areas of rain, strong northerly winds, and embedded squally thunderstorms. Severe Weather Warnings and Watches are in force.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms with this front from Northland to Waitomo, and across to Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, during the afternoon and evening. Heavy rain and strong squally wind gusts of 90-110km/hr are likely to accompany these thunderstorms, and the chance of one or two small tornadoes mainly near the coast. This may cause localised wind damage.
From late afternoon there is a further risk of a few thunderstorms about Waitomo and Taranaki, Horowhenua to Wellington, and about the northern South Island from the Marlborough Sounds to Buller as indicated on the chart. These thunderstorms will mostly be accompanied by heavy rain, and possible strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h from Wellington northwards.
A broad low risk of thunderstorms covers many other northern and western parts of both the North and South Islands as indicated the chart.
Over the south and east of the South Island there is no risk of thunderstorms or significant convection.
