General May Weather

Big difference between you guys and me in the temp. Pressure really starting to drop fast here now too. Not as fast as you tho Brian. Up to 15mm from this now. That's on top of the 20mm we had 2 nights ago.

Is the hole in the rain (that's sitting over north Auckland) the centre of the low?

47mm rain so far from this event. Rain has stopped for now, looks like more on the way in an hour or two.

fronts moving SE usually reactivate and organise off Northland and Coromandel and hit hard again east of Tepuke.Same conditions as Taranaki would experience some 6/12 hours earlier from the same front .hence Tornado/ Downbursts damage reports are more common from those areas.

Howick seems to have been in a "shower corridor" overnight, lots of heavy showers between 6pm and 6am totaling 13.6mm. The airport only had 2.6mm in the same time period.

Gfs has gone crazy this morning, 120mm next week. Would be a drought breaker for you Richard if it came off!

Is it just me or has that got Warm Advection written all over it? Reminiscent of a similar event just after Queens Birthday in 2012....

Time will tell, a wee bit out yet but one to watch

From memory Razor the absolute minimum that the 850hpa temps would need to be for a warm advection snow event down to sea-level is around -4C - is that correct?

Otago Daily Times front page headline of SNOWFALL ALERT saying as many as eight significant snowfalls for the city due to El Nino. Talk about creating hype.
They are saying a cooler winter and much cooler spring than normal. Is this correct and if so will these conditions by localised to eastern coastlines or the whole country? Hopefully brings some more crazy thunderstorms.

I believe NZ is in for extreme weather this year due to El Nino. Its not unreasonable to suggest major snowfall on the way this winter and spring both Islands.

As expected this far out its changed already, looks less rain and less cold for us down here in Canty. Still promising for some useful moisture though, without going crazy

Some afternoon heat showers over SE Auckland this afternoon (photo), due to very cold upper levels and light low level winds today.
