A bit belated, but the activity on the front alone is worth a separate thread.

Heavy thunderstorm at Runanga between 5-6pm I think mainly elevated thunder sounded distant and good flashes of sheet lightning and CG about 1000 meters to NW of my station at about 1730. Blizortung on phone app has been beeping constantly from 10am this morning and still going strong ,More thunderstorms to SW over Hokitika now

I thought this might be of some interest to you on the Lightning Front: So far New Zealand including parts of the Tasman Sea have clocked up over 10,000 Lightning strikes in the last 24 hours.

Sure Looks like an exciting night and morning to come.......
Outlook Tonight:
Metservice wrote:A series of active fronts are expected to pass eastwards over central and northern New Zealand during the morning. These are expected to bring bursts of heavy rain, with squally thunderstorms and hail, to western areas from Auckland to northern Westland, also eastern Bay of Plenty. See the latest SEVERE WEATHER WARNING and WATCH for further details. The most unstable area is likely to be from Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula to Taranaki, also Horowhenua Kapiti Coast, Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds. In these places, there is a high risk of thunderstorms during the morning, bringing localised heavy rain, strong wind gusts of 90 km/h, and hail. These thunderstorms also have a moderate risk of becoming SEVERE, with localised downpours of 25 to 35mm/hr, and the chance of a damaging tornado about coastal areas.

A lesser risk of thunderstorms extends over the far north and central parts of the North Island, inland Marlborough and to South Westland.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued:
Metservice wrote: Issued by MetService at 08:17 pm Monday 11 May 2015
Valid until Midday Tuesday 12 May 2015
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Auckland
Great Barrier Island
Coromandel Peninsula
Waikato
Waitomo
Taumarunui
Taranaki
Kapiti-Horowhenua
Wellington
Marlborough

Several active fronts are expected to move onto the North Island from the Tasman Sea from early to late Tuesday morning, bringing bursts of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms with hail to western areas. A few of these thunderstorms may be SEVERE in the following areas: In the west from Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula to Taranaki, also Horowhenua Kapiti Coast to Wellington, and the Marlborough Sounds. Any SEVERE thunderstorms that occur may produce localised downpours of 25 to 35mm/hr, and possibly one or two small but damaging tornados about coastal areas. Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Worst of it went through at lunchtime in Whakatane, reasonable wind gusts, quite heavy rain, 25-30mm/hr rate, bit of thunder and lightning, but not enough for me to stop working & watch. Passed much quicker than I expected (and earlier too).
