Re: General June Weather
June 2015 was another month of two halves. Exceptionally warm temps in the first half, particularly in the central-south of the S.I. and central areas of the N.I., were countered by a snowstorm and near-record cold temps in the south during the second half.
Early in the month, a few good thunderstorms occurred in the western north of the N.I., while near-record rainfall and flooding occurred in Dunedin. And later in the month more extreme rainfall lead to severe flooding in the West Coast and the Taranaki/Manawatu-Wanganui area.
Apart from central NZ and Southland, sunshine was fairly well above average.
Some very preliminary June 2015 figures for the main centres:

Re: General June Weather
The difference is, the warm maximums early in the month were often only a few hours in the afternoons, and the rest of the day was cool. However, the cold maximums later on were reflecting most of the 24 hour period, and of course the long run of frosts at night was highly significant but has got lost in the month-long statistics. Most people would consider June a cold month, in terms of what they experienced most of the time.

Re: General June Weather
Which brings up the old question of using more data points to determine daily Tmean values. I suspect there is a bigger issue there for Cantabrians than for many parts of NZ. If data is available (say hourly or 3-hourly) it would be interesting to see how well monthly means calculated by 0.5(Tmax+Tmin) methods correlated with the alternative series - say for Ch'ch Aero or Gardens. Locally I don't think the 0.1+ flattered the city at all as the Tmax values were above average and there were more sunny days than usual. For me, the winter months here that feel "colder" are the duller cloudier ones which typically have relatively mild nights.TonyT wrote:The difference is, the warm maximums early in the month were often only a few hours in the afternoons, and the rest of the day was cool. Re: General June Weather
its been a good winter in Auckland so far however I prefer the wetter version of our Winter for the weather interest.
I think for Auckland calculating the mean temp from the min /max works okay because temperatures are quite steady, no sharp rises/falls.

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'June 2015 National Climate Summary'.
Very wet in many parts and an extremely cold snap for the south.
The national average temp of 8.9C was 0.4C above normal.
The month's highest temp of 21.7C was recorded at Cheviot on the 1st, and the lowest of -21.0C was recorded at Tara Hills on the 24th.

Re: General June Weather
2 high 24-hour values are quoted for Hokitika sites, one of them (211mm) claiming to be a record. The Hokitika South site (I think that was the name) surpassed this at least twice - with 9.17" (233mm) in February 1935 and 8.58" (219mm) in January 1958. Since they cite periods going back to 1866, these should have been considered it seems.Nev wrote:Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'June 2015 National Climate Summary'.

Quite a good month for Wellington City with more W/SW flows and a useful sunshine surplus plus a slight positive anomaly for the average Tmax. A vastly better June than the dismal ones of 2010,2011 and 2013.
