You call that chilly? Lol
It's all relative! The previous 6 nights were all 10C+, that's why it felt chilly

Will be interesting to follow Thursdays weather over Otago with the developing low moving in and cold air in the mix.

Dry air over NZ today, Auckland dewpoint down to 1C.

Had a stunning sun set tonight with the clear crisp sky. The silhouette of the hills and mountains was and still is incredible.

Ice here already. Although I think there would be more of the air wasn't so dry. There is only a light dew tonight. Should be a good frost but don't think it will be all that white with the dry air.

harleyb wrote:The clear sky north of here (Manawatu) at sunrise this morning has a strange look about it. There's a very thin layer with a bluish wispy texture and it's very high up. Texture fading as the sun rises further but it was very noticeable when the sun angle was near horizontal. Definitely not cirrus. Last time I saw anything like this was when that Chilean volcano (Chaltén?) went off a few years ago and we saw the ash from it off and on for a few weeks afterwards. Could this be volcanic ash as well? There was another eruption in Chile recently.
Unmistakable ash in the sky this morning just before sunrise. It's very thin but there's a definite a "brush stroke" pattern in the pre-dawn sky which is otherwise cloudless.

I wonder how much this could shave off our winter temps, on top of the effects of El Niño? I can still remember the winter we had after Mt Pinatubo went off, it was a shocker.

Mt Pinatubo , being in the tropics, put the ash very high in the atmosphere, which was a key to the blocking effect
so it might depend on how high into the atmosphere the ash is from the chilean volcano?

Good point. What I can see now looks like it is also very high up. Can anyone else see it? I can still see it now if I hold my hand out to block the sun and look a few degrees to the side... it's not as striking as it was about 30 mins before sunrise but there's definitely something there. Either that or I need to rub the sleep out of my eyes. :-)

I've been thinking for the past few days that the sunlight isn't as clear as it might be, even on the blue-sky days :-k

We had way less rain than was predicted with today's front. Only 5mm, was expecting more like 30-40mm

We've had 81.2mm since midnight, here in Palmy. Lots of flooding and road closures around Manawatu and Whanganui. Still moderate rain falling. Hoping it will stop shortly as there are many streams and rivers running at really high levels.

Lotsa rain with this system moving north over the NI according to the news.
A weak convergence moved over here at 5pm with some drizzle from dark clouds moving SW from the NE.

Not looking good for Whanganui. River still on the way up even though the tide is well on the way out.

Amazing, as the last time I was in Martinborough, the Ruamahanga was quite dry, but that was Feb last year.

Renee mentioned tonight that today's 22C at Napier was a June record, which is complete rubbish. :-s
Napier Aero's record is 24.3C set in 1981, and NIWA's Napier Nelson Park's record is 23.3C set in 1988.

Update: Actually 21.5C at Napier Aero, or its 7th equal highest June temp since records began in 1974.

107mm to 8pm and still raining. Although, looking at the radar and satellite images, the rain looks like it should decrease in the next couple of hours.

Would be very interesting to see what river levels are doing tonight. But the horizons.govt.nz website with river levels seems to not be able to cope at an opportune time tonight. Scalability of websites seems to be lacking for many govt sites at times.
