Farout!!!!!! That hit with a bang. Thunder right over us, torrential rain and went from 30km/h wind straight up to 92.5. By my thinking that's equal with my all time strongest wind. My records are not showing correctly so don't know for sure.

For me that was the best storm I've had in the last couple of years. Constant thunder, lightning everywhere.

funny you should say, as yup, I was just suggesting that to Ricky too

Very gusty (but Brief) winds were recorded in Waiuku too (47kts)
Jamie, if you saw the rain radar, the front seemed to pick up a burst of wind and intensify that moved down from the Firth of Thames, i.e thats where the strong winds came from for you :)

Yea had a good storm around 7.20 PM, nice good IC rumbles.
Raglans power was cut for around half an hour, and the locals had quite a light show apparently.

Im really not surprised by that Hail, the upper level dynamics were favourable and there was an element of the interaction with that the Northerly and upper level North West.

Another photo of the West Ak storm, had the look of possible rotation in this storm.

yes more activity heading for the west of the North Island overnight.

Looks like another front inbound Wednesday early PM but the dynamics look weaker tomorrow on what we had today.

The base and assoc scud seem to be tilted on on one side, the updraft region in the middle half of the pic seems to suggest to some element of turning going on.

Was the camera facing NW (or there about)? then it looks like the models were correct with the SFC air being drawn in on the Northerly.

Plenty of heavy showers and thunderstorms heading for western parts of the North Island overnight and tomorrow, mostly from Taranki northwards. CAPE's remain large, but the deep layer shear which was a part of this evening's storms are missing in tomorrows thunderstorms. Still looks squally though, with storm motions 40-45kt tomorrow as the low passes across the lower North Island.

Unfortunately I discovered my camera batteries dying, and my tablet was the handiest thing for pictures! I'll have a good look tomorrow for any better. This initially was to the north west of me and passed very close to the south. Incredible thunder

Great video Rodalco. Good lightning footage and interesting cloud structure at the end.

Looked quite spectacular over the city skyline from here, albeit a little diffused by foreground cloud.
And a few good flash/bangs and brief heavy rain as the front passed over here over, 6.2mm in total.

Impressive temps earlier in the afternoon for June as well, with 21.1C at Whenuapai Aero, 20.2C at Akld Aero and 20.4 at Ricky's Grey Lynn site.

Thunderstorm Outlook for Today:
Metservice wrote: An unstable airmass is expected to affect much of the North Island and upper South Island today, while a deep low moves across the lower North Island this evening.

There is a high risk of thunderstorms in Taranaki, Waitomo and western parts of Waikato today. These storms are likely to produce brief heavy rain of 10 to 25mm per hour, hail of 10 to 20mm in diameter, strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and there is also a low risk of a small coastal tornado.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms over many other parts of the upper North Island today, especially about eastern Bay of Plenty, as indicated on the map. These storms could also produce brief heavy rain, hail and strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h.

There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms over parts of Nelson and northern Marlborough this morning and afternoon, easing from the west this evening. These storms could be accompanied by brief heavy rain of 10 to 25mm per hour and small hail.

As the low transits across the lower North Island this evening, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms from Wanganui to northern Wellington. These storms could also be accompanied by localised heavy rain and small hail.

A low risk of thunderstorms affects a broader area of the North Island and upper South Island as indicated on the chart.

No thunderstorms or severe convection expected elsewhere.
