Re: Possible low-level snow for S.I. - June 18-19
My Weather station has stopped working but the mercury thermo is reading 4deg in New Brighton - I have had snow here hen it has been 5-6deg before. This will be a non event I think. I also think the strong Easterly wind change by MS is odd. It's just not normal for CHCH.
I'm no expert but I love severe weather!

If you look at the latest radar loop you will see that the precip elements that were moving from the southeast earlier are now approaching more from the east - in other words the flow does look like it is turning more northeasterly and so maybe a northeasterly into the CHCH area will develop as the 3hrly rain panels suggest and as the front drops pressures east of the mountains as it crosses tonight.petem8nz wrote:...I also think the strong Easterly wind change by MS is odd. The event has never looked quite cold enough for Christchurch.
Will be interesting to see what the inland totals are tomorrow.

Agree. I think most of the usual suspects here have been of that view. The folks inland must be getting a once in a lifetime gig tho

Meanwhile, massive totals of rain coming in from the West Coast, Hokitika just had 53mm in just over an hour. Most highways on the Coast are now closed either by flooding or snow

Sunday night. Early hours Monday has me interested with the word snow to low levels. But not much moisture and brief.

Yes onto the next system now!! Both GFS and ACCESS both have 850hpa temps of -10C over the bottom of the South Island on Sunday night/Monday morning, I can't ever remember seeing anything lower then that in the past?? Also some potentially record breaking minimum temps for Tuesday and Wednesdsy morning - The perfect setup with Metservice going for -6C for Christchurch! I have never seen that forecast before...mikestormchaser wrote:Sunday night. Early hours Monday has me interested with the word snow to low levels. But not much moisture and brief.

Re: South Island Snowstorm - June 18-19
More of the usual braindead sensationalism, this time from the ODT, who claim Omarama received 25cm of snow by 4 PM.
Well, it's now 07:30 the following day after a full night of light snowfall and we still only have 11 cm on hard level surfaces out in the open.
But, hey, why stick to the dull old facts when instead you can go with some completely made up crap that's so much more exciting?
NZ "journalism" at its finest.

Re: South Island Snowstorm - June 18-19
Well, we ended up with 90.1mm of rain in the last 24 hours and counting.
No issues for us, but quite a number on the coast.
Grey and Buller Rivers are very very high with high tide potentially causing issues later today.
And as said above, Hokitika got slammed.
Slightly interestingly we recorded our max temperature at 11:36pm yesterday, the exact opposite of the east coast which got colder as the day progressed....
Certainly was a system with a bit of everything......

Indeed, be good if the above posts could be moderated, I just wasted 30 seconds of my life thinking there might be some snowfall updates in the new posts...
