Interesting the way that the rain band developed as it moved inland...

Thank you. I think it might miss us here in Rakaia, looks like it is going around us as usual.Skywatcher wrote:Radar is here: http://metservice.com/maps-radar/rain-radar/canterburysnowykiwi wrote:May I ask the link for the radar please?

Similar temp out here on the Peninsula, getting fairly heavy showers of hail now. Coldest air still looks a good 6-12 hours away as well so should see some snow soon.Ice Maiden wrote:Temperature down to 3.2C here now and the first shower has just gone through since the front at 2pm -

Re: Polar Blast - June 21-22
Southerly blasted in around 6pm with some rain sleet and the odd wind driven flake, good to see even that band develop on land like that considering its still quite SW which will swing more SSW then southerly in the coming hours.
Possibly no more activity until midnight but then it should get interesting, i wouldnt say 10-15cm but i think many areas about the coast rakaia northwards should get more than 1-3cm, 5-8cm i reckon and 10-15cm above 200m especially on the penninsula.

Dunedin up to 6deg now, althogh gore on 2.9 and dropping, queenstown on 0.5... so i would think the coldest air is arriving down south now?

Yes up to 6C now back down to 4.7C - all over the place, wind has turned more Southerly now though and just had a good heavy hail shower
Re: Polar Blast - June 21-22
Yeah cold pool just about to reach us judging by a 3hr old sat image and the dodgy radar coverage of this region.
The temp fluctuations would be due to the variable wind directions I am thinking. Up to 7C here at the moment.

Metservice do not help themselves sometimes.....
Always going to be a band of showers then a chain set up north of the Rakaia

They're hopeless at times. Even when it's obvious that the forecast weather has changed, ie, improved, no more showers etc, they don't reflect the changes in their updates. Well, for some places they don't. Wouldn't be surprised if the 11pm update stayed exactly the same no matter what..
Re: Polar Blast - June 21-22
It depends if the person ( I am presuming they only employ 1 forecaster on a Sunday night??) that probably does all the forecasts for NZ at 11pm actually checks the current conditions, going by experiences with the Dunedin forecast they probably wont. I've always wonder what the forecasters actually do at the metservice on a weekend, check their facebook page maybe watch cat videos?
On a similar topic, they don't seem to issue Snow Otago Warnings or Special Advisories any more either, at least they haven't for a while anyway...

Nice coating of hail/sleet on the Dunedin webcams with the latest showers.

Getting quite frequent hail and snow showers now. Temperature has dropped from 7 degrees to 2 degrees in the city. The highgate cameras are white with either hail or snow and snow is settling here at about 150m asl

Re: Polar Blast - June 21-22
Showers in an hour early here with a good intermix of sleet too, strong gusty southerly as well.
I am also noticing the land enhancement going on with the radars, the showers getting more intense as they hit land which could go down well overnight

Re: Polar Blast - June 21-22
Wind has picked up again here in Rakaia. No rain or anything here as we seem to be missing the showers coming onshore.
