Thanks for your comments spwill.
I have attached a short table to show the temperatures recorded at Pukaki Airport as shown on the website WeatherUnderground. I assume this is the same station is the MetService one. It shows just how cold it has been in the Mackenzie Basin. The temperature has fallen again to -10*C this morning making that a run of 5 nights below this value. I wouldn't think that happens too often.

The only problem with the stats that the wunderground site displays is that they are based on 30min obs. As that station appeared to only update to their site every 30mins. So mins were actually a bit lower.
Weather undergrounds web pages introduce a lot of errors to weather stations data too. For example the dew point at that site was quite regularly above the ambient temp.

I appreciate that this site is not perfect, but it does offer a guide to the nature of this cold spell in that area. I could not find any data offered by the national met service so this had to do. The dew point figure looked wrong I agree, but the temperature figures were close to the figures quoted in various threads on this cold spell. Hopefully at some stage we can view the official record.

Pukaki Aero AWS has a summary line published in the monthly NIWA stats. summary, and the daily data should be on CLiFlo with only a short time lag. Manual sites generally take longer re appearance of daily stats.Simon Culling wrote:I appreciate that this site is not perfect, but it does offer a guide to the nature of this cold spell in that area. Thanks for your feedback, Rupert. Is the database to which you refer, CLiFlo, available on-line?

Here Simon ... you need to register (free) and probably look at the help before searching for daily statistics or anything else ...Simon Culling wrote:Thanks for your feedback, Rupert. Is the database to which you refer, CLiFlo, available on-line?

Pukaki Aero around -9C to -11C this morn, while Tekapo and Omarama are in the low pluses?

Nw winds blow down both lake Tekapo and the Ahuriri river valleys very easy but Twizel sits in a calm cold basin.

Looks like the spell may be over, Pukaki up to 8.5C.
