in the winter time the highs tend to park over australia, (cold in land at night time there) and so the weather patterns go around that high ..sort of thing
re the solar cycles...the last dip between sun spots was a big dip and so the solar activity has been on the low side for the last 10 years...which probably has contributed to the global warming 'pause' a bit ...but with the latest peak in sun spot activity triggering the next big el nino, the globe is set to have it warmest year this year (since records began)
so if this forecasted solar minimum does come about it will certainly slow down global warming....but because of global warming , that might mean we only go back to 'normal' temperatures for a 10 year period maybe?

Interesting morning with all the roads around here were white and frosty but the paddocks and grassy areas seemed to have not much frost cover on them.
Haven't seen that before?

That would be at Levels, the city temperature would be much higher, possibly 5C
Locked in high cloud, no sunshine, from the forth-coming Northerly flow and the fact that there will be not much wind to disperse the recent cold weather's events on the ground temperature, which would contribute to the fact that it would be a cold day in that area.

Some unexpected spillover rain here in ChCh this evening. As for that Timaru temp, can believe it having lived there, occasionally pre-frontal winter days seem to trap a pool of cold air around the lee of the hills and really make it cold so long as there is no wind

I will be keeping an eye on the dew point today in Auckland. if it can get to dp 13C+ we are in the risk area for a thunderstorm later in the day.
GFS looks more favourable for the moisture than ukmet.

Getting quite a bit more rain than was expecting here today.
Up to 43mm for the day when was expecting 15-20mm based on the forecasts.
Been heavy at times as well - set a July hourly rainfall mark in the process.
In saying that, not a bad change after the clear bone-chilling days of late.

We are getting some of the heavy rain - local monitoring site in Henderson is reporting 36mm in the last hour, it will be interesting to keep an eye on the local stream level in the next hour or two... it's come up 2 meters [edit 2.5 meters now] since 3pm

I've got no gauges at home, but going by the water pouring over the spouting! And Sky TV not working, I'd say probably about the same!

you could think of australia as being a big rock in a river, with the current going around that rock...but will wash over it in surges

Was that thunder I just heard?

There is a video on Facebook of the koru lounge in Auckland airport with water pouring thru the ceiling.

That was interesting - I've seen records of the stream flooding to 6 meters - normally it's around 0.8m. The 6 meter flood occurred just over 10 years ago in a very similar scenario.

Council data from tonight:
Capture.JPG
What it normally looks like - running at 0.8m - note the cabbage trees:

Tonight - running at 5m 8.50pm - same cabbage trees:

The bridge was thrumming as I was standing on it. Probably not a good idea...
