Interesting to see Auckland Airport lagging other nearby sites by about 2C at this, the warmest time of the day. Wonder if the upper Manukau waters have dropped to the 10 or 11C range after lots of cold nights.

EDIT: Disregard this, sorry. Hadn't caught up with the news that there had been some fog there this morning. That explains it.

Ah! Fog in the region would explain the "smell of the sea" I noticed here at Orewa this morning.

My one word weather report for today was 'boring'! Still the NW arch made for a nice sunset. :-)

Was getting a little off-topic here, so I've moved this morning's discussion to the 'Climate Change and Effects' thread in 'Off Topic'. :-)

I don't think I've ever seen a warmer 2 week period coming up for July/early August then what is forecast at present by the models, Christchurch is already running above the average July maximum temp (despite people thinking it's been a freezing cold July), this coming after a warmer then average June for Christchurch and this winter is shaping up as anything but the colder then average winter some experts were predicting...

Fair comment but note that Christchurch has been warmer than the rest of Canterbury, a bit of an anomaly in what I would say has almost certainly surely been a colder than average winter for most South Islanders

always good to check out
http://www.niwa.co.nz/static/climate/mo ... p.png?1234
which shows month to date, the south island is above average in some areas but below average in others (not by much either way though)

To midnight last night my station's 1-minute average is actually "normal" (6.1C) for July. Even with the mild temps forecast, I don't think it will beat the record of 8.2C set in 2013 which was also followed by a record warm August that year.

2014 was also a mild winter here so I think people have forgotten what it can be like...

Yep completely agree Skywatcher, people have very short memories and all it takes is a couple of cold spells of 4-5 days over a month and suddenly they think we are having a cold winter!! I try to tell them we are tracking above the June/July average max but they find it very hard to believe...

The frosts have been heavier here this winter compared to the last few winters which has made it feel colder than normal, unfortunately this wont be refluxed in NIWA climate month to date temp cart because of the lack of any accurate temperature sensors in this area.

The Niwa climate maps do show your region as being 0.5 - 1.5C colder than average which is significant for a 24 day period.

Auckland has been cooler, sunnier and wetter than normal this July although the heavy rain has been quite localised at times (rain from Cumulonimbus). Ak Airport showing 152.8mm while Whangaporoa 56.8mm

Wonder what that figure would be if they had accurate data

I see WeatherWatch has a poll regarding how you would grade 2015's winter so far? Seems to be quite evenly spread between excellent, average and awful :-)

I don't do their polls now, not enough variations in their choices for answers. q-

Is that for the winter weather or their winter forecasts?
