mounting anemometer

Unread post by trickytiger »

Just wondering if anyone here knows of a place in NZ that sells poles that are 10m or close to 10m in length as I'm ordering a Davis Vantage Pro2 tonight and would like to try and get the anemometer higher than the hedge to the south of me which is at an estimate 7-8m tall.

Galv Steel comes in 6.5m lengths from memory, Aluminium in 5m, so you are likely to need to join two different lengths. Also at that length you'll need 2 sets of guy wires.

Steel & Tube, or Ulrich Aluminium is whom you need to be talking to.

A good second hand hardwood or treated pine power pole would do the trick. That way you wouldn't need guys if you bury it 5ft in the ground. Even if it wasn't quite long enough you could still bolt a metre or so of galv pipe to the top. Local network contractors should be able to help you out with that for reasonable price. Presumably Electricity Ashburton would be your closest. Probably only be 40 or 50 bucks. If you have access to some machinery to erect it that is. Or a few ropes and some rigging skills.

thanks for the suggestions, i'll ask the suggested places for quotes and save up the money to get it up to the 10m, in the meantime it will be mounted at 3m. Every other part of the station will be able to be mounted at the correct height straight away.

Keep an eye on TradeMe for a yacht mast, or even go and ask around at yacht clubs or boatbuilders - they may have some old/damaged ones lying around.

Never thought of a yacht mast... might be a little thick? Have got a quote from a mate of $170 that reckons he can make a 10m pole out of an old trampoline he has, i'm not too sure it would make 10m though. Am waiting to hear back from an engineer mate on a pole he can make at his work which would be 2 6m poles with a threaded socket to join together.

my 12m mast is about 90 x 120mm at the base. At least I know it is more than strong enough to do the job :D

I got a bargain - it cost me $100 (plus a hacksaw blade to cut it to legal length to put on my car roof)

$100 isn't too bad, worth looking into to. I would think they would be dearer down here though, would have to buy some bigger mounting brackets at that size too as the davis ones wouldn't fit that thickness...

ended up getting two lengths of 5m aluminium tubing from steel and tube.

Also the weather station arrived today :) have just installed the anemometer at 5m for now and the rain bucket and temp sensor at 6ft as I was a bit short on funds to join the two tubes together and get the guy wires.

It is online at: http://ultramadweather.net.nz
