Northland Radar

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

Went up to Kaeo Radar Site Today while on Holiday, what a Magnificent place for the radar to be placed! (I was going to place this in the Northland thread but its the archived 2014 group)

The view is absolutely amazing! Props to Tony Quayle at Metservice for picking a top spot for the Radar.

The farmer where the Radar is situated is a top bloke, man he so friendly.

I expect it'll have mains and a DSL feed. The dish is probably an IPStar backup link for DSL failures. One shed will have an engine alternator for mains failure with a UPS to keep things going whilst it starts. I'm impressed by the size of the radome sections. Looks very similar to the Bay of Plenty installation a number of us visited.

Yup, fibre channels and a mainstream mains feed had to be all put in. The AC runs full time to keep the computer equipment cool. But seeing the distance away, and the shear amount of power poles they had to put in,.....
Very very expensive....

Wow, what awesome views. Cool photos, Tim. I may have to go and visit the site myself one day if I'm up that way.

Yea amazing place that's for sure!

The Radar is on private land and access to it goes across multiple land titles with different owners.
Reason why I got up there is that cause I am friends with a local who knows the owner(s).

The owner, is very approachable, but I cant share his address as it is a private residence and if I post it here then he will get bombarded with requests.
You might want to ask Tony Qualye at Metservice to see when they do maintenance, you might be able to tag along when they do it.

Now that I think of it, The amount of money pumped into that Radar must have been much more than 3M. All the power and fibre channel access to be put in, with around 10+ commercial power poles and laying the fibre down potentially down the whole road (10K+)
