Looks very interesting this afternoon with those throughs and fronts moving in:
Metservice wrote:A front over the central North Island is forecast to move slowly northwards today, while another faster moving front crosses northern New Zealand later this afternoon and early evening.
There is a high risk of thunderstorms from Waikato up to Northland and across to Coromandel Peninsula from later this morning or especially this afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms are expected to produce locally heavy rain of 15 to 25mm per hour, hail of 10 to 20mm in diameter and strong wind gusts around 100 km/h. There is also a moderate risk of one or two SEVERE thunderstorms through to this evening, which could produce localised downpours of 25 to 35mm per hour, potentially damaging hail over 20mm,damaging wind gusts over 110 km/h and possibly a small tornado. A SEVERE thunderstorms WATCH has been issued.
There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms over Waitomo, Taumarunui and far northern parts of Taranaki this morning and early afternoon and about parts of Bay of Plenty, mainly in the east this afternoon and evening. Any thunderstorms that eventuate here are also likely to produce locally heavy rain of 10 to 25mm per hour, small hail and strong wind gusts around 90 to 100 km/h. There is a broader low risk of thunderstorms extending slightly further south as indicated on the chart.
In the south of the South Island, a very cold southwesterly flow becomes more southerly during the day, with small hail and snow showers to low levels. There is a low risk that one or two showers may briefly turn thundery near the coast from southern Fiordland to coastal Otago during the morning and afternoon and about Christchurch City and Banks Peninsula this evening.
Elsewhere, no thunderstorms or significant convection expected.

This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Northland
Auckland
Great Barrier Island
Coromandel Peninsula
Waikato
There is a risk of one or two SEVERE thunderstorms from Waikato up to Northland and across to Coromandel Peninsula from later this morning or especially this afternoon and evening, which could produce localised downpours of 25 to 35mm per hour, hail over 20mm in diameter, strong wind gusts over 110 km/h and possibly a small tornado.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding and may also lead to slips and make driving hazardous. Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses. Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including to trees and power lines. If any tornados occur, they will only affect very localised areas.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
