http://www.tbkcapital.co.nz/projects/pr ... re-you-areMetTrigger Holdings is a company formed to provide high quality commercially focused weather information and solutions that will unlock demand for better weather observation and forecast data. Revenues are derived from selling high quality weather data (observations and forecasts, plus related software apps and services)...
To provide high quality localised data, MetTrigger has developed a concept for deploying a “hyperlocalised” weather observation collection network (WSN) that combines;
•fixed location weather stations,
•mobile weather stations, and
•a data collection cloud service.
The Company also owns a value added app, “WeatherMaster” that combines weather observations from fixed location and on-vehicle mobile weather stations with forecasts. Downer Group is now using this to monitor and respond to snow and ice conditions on the North Island Central Plateau...
MetTrigger is also researching the implementation of a lightning detection network (LDN) in New Zealand. There are a number of potential commercial uses for lightning data and this may present a further high value investment opportunity during 2016.

MetTrigger Holdings - Possible new kid on the block
Unsure how many of you may have seen this? Possible new kid on the block in direct competition with MS.

Different people behind it. This one is really really micro forecasting!!! Crazy, can't see how this one would work, unless it's big construction worksite.TonyT wrote:They are not the only ones going done this micro forecasting road (or perhaps this is part of the same outfit):

Re: MetTrigger Holdings - Possible new kid on the block
Hmmm. Interesting.
Not so sure that this company is direct competition for MS though... It says it's revenue will come from selling it's obs, yet MS give out (a certain amount of) their obs for free on their website. This company is certainly not going to be doing that, if that's how it's planning on making it's revenue. Possibly MS is even one of their potential customers! They've certainly got the most money available to purchase observation information!
Also 03stormchaser, I don't see how that weather2work app will work either... I suspect it will be relying on purely model data. Unless smart phones happen to have thermometers and hygrometers built into them these days, which I'm pretty sure they don't!

The market for weather products in NZ is quite small and there is no fast buck to be made in it. That's my intuitive opinion on the state of the industry.
Some other countries like USA have a massive market for weather products but there is a lot of supply over there.

It may be small, but look at Canterbury we have 3-4 weather forecasting companies here. MS, WW, Blue skies and CWU.

I don't think there would be many contracts up for grabs in NZ for Weather Services. If you wanted to tender in the market you would need to have scientific credentials.
Met Service seem to do a lot of their business offshore.

I am living proof that this is so very true!NZstorm wrote:The market for weather products in NZ is quite small and there is no fast buck to be made in it.
Lots of people are interested in the weather and want to hear a forecast, and quick to complain about the perceived accuracy of forecasts and forecasters, but very few are prepared to part with the cash to make it happen. It doesn't help that there are (probably good intentioned) people out there happy to give away their expertise for free.NZstorm wrote:I don't think there would be many contracts up for grabs in NZ for Weather Services.

Umm, a little on the optimistic side aren't we?!The New Zealand WSN is expected to generate a loss in the first year of around $680,000 as the network is installed and commercial activity is established. By year 2 it is expected to generate a net operating profit of around $894,000, rising to $1,800,000 by year 4. Operating cashflow is expected to exceed $2,500,000 by year 4.

Maybe they will contract out to nasa and the kiwi lab firms and offshore sectors investing here?

The USA has a good Met industry, due as much to its climate as its large economy. The weather there really is quite extreme, making NZs weather look tame by comparison.

I can agree with that 100%, they seem to cope a whole lot better with extreme events and getting on with life afterwards.NZstorm wrote:...making NZs weather look tame by comparison.
Be watching this company's progress with interest.
