He has stuck to his guns for the entire lead up to this event with 5-10cm above 200m, we will see I guess!
I have also had the rider "possible heavier falls till dawn on Sunday in North Canty" on each snow forecast sent out. And I do still wonder about snow on the beach at Kaikoura. As you say we will see, but I just dont see much moisture in the air from Mid Canty southwards.
wow, this low has exploded overnight and is coming in fast
barometer dropping alot already here and rain started already...and yet there was no sign of it at dusk last night
The main snow action looks north of about Ashburton with heavy snow developing inland mid to late afternoon, some low level snow along the coast tonight, easing to a few wintry showers after midnight
Smoke for the fire is drifting straight down to ground level, a real sign of dropping air pressure. Only one deg here and rain is about an hour away,so wonder if its going to warm up much before it turns to snow.
Only sitting on around 5C here this morning, will probably warm up abit as it starts to rain and before the southerly kicks in.
Today will be a case of firstly how low the snow will fall to within the heavy precipitation from especially 5pm onwards, and secondly the wintry coastal showers that kick in from around 9pm which also have the potential to bring the snow down to fairly close to sea level anyway.
This system is a sit on the fence one see what happens, Australia got a good taste of this cold air the other day bringing snow down to 800m in Queensland.
You gotta love WeatherWatch's headline... "NZ rates WeatherWatch #1 for snow forecasts"
Their sample consists of only WeatherWatch readers/followers, i.e. extreme selection bias. So any conclusions drawn from the poll were already null and void just because of that...
Temps seems to be 1-2C warmer then forecast at this stage, there is a lot of ground to make up now if the snow is to get down as low as the metservice said it would!
Been snowing on and off all day here but only settled at probably 3-400 metres. Nothing here at 200. Been a few people in Invercargill reporting snow showers late this afternoon
Me thinks all is still on track... 0.9deg in gore... 4.9 in chch and the radar looks impressive..... should be snowing to around 300m at the moment.. and drop as the evening wears on!
EDIT: Looking at the radar... the southerly front has now joined with the front attached to the northern low... its happening!

Been quite steady rain here in Rakaia since just after 4pm. Had a wee bit of sleet and a strong southerly, wind has eased here as has the rain. We were in Ashburton at lunch time, a freezing cold 2 degrees there at midday.
