Re: General July Weather
I agree, just a hearty squall, not "mini tornados" caused by a "weather bomb" like the herald reports.NZstorm wrote:Been for a drive and seen broken tree branches but nothing major. Looks like squalls.

General July Weather
I emailed them to explain what a weather bomb actually is, though I suspect it won't make an iota of difference.

Re: General July Weather
Stuff reporting the following just now.
A tornado has been seen in Tauranga and Mt Manganui. More soon.
Edit: Appears like it was nothing of the sort. Jeez media in NZ are terrible
Also reports of planes being flipped at Ardmore earlier.

Re: General July Weather
I had a look at that damage in Avondale and it looks like there was a small tornado there.
Fallen Eucalyptus did the damage but there was other plants ripped out there was well. Part of a roof was gone on a house.

Thanks Steven, that damage is starting to look more like tornado damage.

Bit belated but, as this is a significant event in itself, thought it might pay to give it its own thread.

We had a nice afternoon in Auckland with 16C. But the next round of showers is arriving and i'm expecting a squall or two here. 850mb flow is 55knots!

Was at Mahurangi this morning as the line went through about 10 - 5 minute burst of phenomenal rain and wind to match. I didn't see any evidence of different wind directions, despite having a couple of hours to look around as I waited for power and Fire Service to clear the fallen trees and downed powerlines across the road, so I'm going for microburst. Wind speeds were still strong enough to pepper me with airborne grit off the carpark surface as I bravely cowered behind the car.

Seemed to be a pretty good eye-witness confirmation of the Wellsford 'tornado' on TV3 tonight.

A fairly uneventful evening from the sounds of things. Barometer has dropped 25 hPa since midnight!

That's not overly unusual for you though is it? Auckland airport is only recording gusts around 40 km/h tonight, around 35 km/h gusts here.Manukau heads obs wrote:100kmh gusts here this evening is not uneventful

Yes, it seems we always miss the wind in NW flow here in Auckland.David wrote:That's not overly unusual for you though is it? Auckland airport is only recording gusts around 40 km/h tonight, around 35 km/h gusts here.Manukau heads obs wrote:100kmh gusts here this evening is not uneventful

Re: Heavy Rain, Squalls & possible Tornadoes upper N.I. - Jul 18
I see M/S still warning for period of severe westerly gales from now until 6am
Well, its windy here but not like whats forecasted (in fact its been slowly easing from the peak when the westerly first developed after 6pm when we were getting a good gale.
update: wind is picking up here now having said the above
amazing to see all the damage across the auckland area..and over a large area too, on the news reports
(large trees down,and across cars/houses)
that sure was a powerfull and active front that moved across the auckland area
It sure looked great looking back at it after it passed over...mamatus cloud and all...real active looking...not surprised to hear of reports of actual eye witness of rotating whirlwinds/debri..i.e small tornadoes...but obviously alot of the damage also from the intense but short duration squall line (with 65 (120kmh) kt winds by the looks) that moved through)
ps, baro dropped to 986.6 here just after 6pm so the low deepened rapidly alright as the models predicted

Re: Heavy Rain, Squalls & possible Tornadoes upper N.I. - Jul 18
Apart from the Wellsford incident, these reports from Manurewa and Pt Chevalier are the only other 2 that I have found so far that come close to visual conformation of a tornado or funnel-cloud...
'Auckland hit by weather bomb' - The Aucklander (Stuff)
The Wellsford resident described it on TV3 last night as like a big spinning sort of spiral that touched down just before it headed his way and damaged parts of their house.
