This lentic formation is triggered by Stewart Island, highest point Mt Anglem 980m, some 50km across Foveaux Strait and obscured from view by that hill in the right foreground.
This type of formation is not uncommon when a steady westerly flow is blowing aloft, and the local saying is "rain and wind within 48hours". That is a fairly safe prediction in these latitudes of course
The shot is taken from Sandy Point, a few km's west of Invercargill and looking south.
