Hi all

Here is proof I am certifiably mad.

I am running the Great Naseby Water Race 100 Miler starting Friday lunchtime 28 August. Last year I did the 100km and the year before 40km and the weather was mid to high teens in the afternoons with -5 degree frosts, pretty much expected ideal conditions for this time of year.

I await with interest how this year plays out now I'm doing the longer race which will involve going though the night and into the next day.

At this stage its too far out to take a forecast seriously but the models are favouring low level snow as at todays model runs- lets see how accurate they were in ten days time!!!

I'm planning on dipping my toes into the world of ultra's at the Northburn 50k'er in March.

Weather-wise, the fact it'll be chilly overnight won't be in doubt, but the mid to high teens would be up in the air I would bet.

Im headed to Ruapehu this weekend for 8 days and Ive been keeping my eye on the forecast for some quite some time and wow has it changed alot. One minute theres 100mm of warm rain coming then next minute its snow down to ohakune lol and so on..

Anyway fingers crossed for good weather for ya!

Good luck with the 160km run Razor. I thought the 100km Tarawera was a big run!

43 mate...they say its the best age for endurance events....

Got my best Kepler Challenge time last year out of 9 goes, so maybe some truth in it??? Who knows. Its 80% a mindgame once you get beyond a normal marathon distance.

And its gotta be trail running in the hills etc, not mindless knee-wrecking asphalt pounding

You've been doing these events for a while then Razor. Nice work.
So you did marathons before getting into Ultra's or did you skip that distance?
And do you do any marathons these days or just stick to the longer races?

I've decided to try the longer ones after doing 9 marathons, with 6 in the last 18 months or so.
Need something slightly different for a while.

I hate road running, its all about trails. Trail running is so much better on the knees than pounding asphalt. I am a tramper by nature, and since kids have come along theres been a little less time for tramping (till they get a bit bigger anyway) so we tend to condense those trails into runs more often than not until the kids get bigger

A typical week for me is around 100km, half running to and from work each day (6.7km each way) and the other half in the Port Hills or in the mountains somewhere. its all about time on feet really.

Did my first Kepler Challenge back in 2001 and have been raising the bar since then. Honestly don't know if I can get around the full 160km next week, but will give it heaps in the knowledge that I finished the 100km down there last year in just under 13 hours, and felt like there was still a wee bit of gas in the tank

Anyway, back on weather topic GFS holding steady with pretty settled weather for the south next week, maybe a weak front around late Friday night to cool us off

GFS has certainly been jumping back and forward this week. As we get closer its looking increasingly wetter for Friday and Saturday. Hope not!

Well we are off. Starts at lunchtime tomorrow. Looks like some patchy rain Friday night and Saturday at times. Possibly sitting near the snowline on Sunday for the recovery day? Bearing in mind Naseby is 2000ft above worry level. The off to Mt Cook Monday.

Well started with a cold the day before that developed into a fairly nasty chest infection during the race. Pulled out 12 hours in at midnight with 70km under the belt and some seriously nasty stuff being coughed up out of the lungs. All good now after a couple of unpleasant days recovery. Next year!!!!
Weather was mild for Naseby, with a couple of brief spells of rain. Mrs Sharpe and her mate completed the 60km team (30 each)

Looked a bit muddy in the pics - all part of the fun I suppose.
