Have been watching a mint CB go up north of Whanganui from my place in Kapiti, Blitzortung picking up some lightning activity on it. Got a timelapse going which I will post tonight if it turns out any good. Should have chased!

In Rotorua, saw plenty of cloud buildups yesterday afternoon - looked as if building up to something, but nothing eventuated bar a few scattered showers. (not in city)

A cool September overall. A heavy rain event for the east from Gisborne to Marlborough (and parts of north Canterbury), otherwise dry for most of the South Island and remarkably sunny on the West Coast.

For Howick, average min 8.8C, average max 16.4C, total rainfall 109mm. Pretty standard figures. Of note was that the coldest temperature was only 5.5C - no particularly cold nights all month.

The comment about how remarkably sunny it was on the West Coast is not an exaggeration. A stunning September was had, with the last 2 weeks in particular breathtakingly good. I don't have my stats at hand as we're mid-move so it's all packed away, but I believe my average daily max was 16.4°C which is stupidly warm. We also only had 73mm of rain which is virtually zero for these parts, particularly for spring, and when I looked at NIWA's data a week or so back it'll end up being the 2nd driest September since records began in the 1960's.

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'September National Climate Summary'.

A wet end to the month for eastern North Island.

The national average temp of 9.8C was 0.9C below normal.

The month's highest temp of 25.7C was yet again recorded at Christchurch (Riccarton) on the 16th, and the lowest temp of -7.0C was recorded at Hanmer Forest on the 8th.

Spent a few days on the Paparoa coastline last weekend north of Punakaiki.Beautiful part of NZ with its own microclimate.Certainly noticed a big difference in warmth after arriving from a drab Canterbury under an easterly flow.

Regarding the West Coast, again one has to note that the sunshine anomalies are for EWSs versus manual site means, so they look more impressive than they really are. But the like for like comparison should still show a substantial surplus however ...
