Re: General September Weather
The cloud roiling dust and that scary roar of the wind approaching had be going there for a moment. I knew it wasn't a tornado but survival instincts must have overridden logic because I rushed inside in a panic!

Re: General September Weather
According to Stuff...
I would have said it brought more of a darkening...A strong southerly storm has hit Christchurch, bringing heavy rain and lightening.

Re: General September Weather
Just had the change here, magnificent sky with cloud exploding and rolling in all directions. I remember many of these type of changes in the 82/83 season.

Came through here about 4.45pm with a SSE wind, not as strong as it sounds like at the airport.

Re: General September Weather
got 2.2mm here, unsure on what the windspeed was due to the anemometer still not being high enough to catch the southerly but was strong enough to make it hard to walk into

Re: General September Weather
Having trouble with my modem/router at the moment, must get a new one.
Anyway, cold front came through@ 3:15pm here. Nice one , a predecessor for the current stormy spring weather to come. No lightning seen but a couple of late rumbles of thunder heard to the SE, as it rolled on through.
Winds very strong here at the onset with one or two string gusts. Temperature droppage was noticeable too.

Re: General September Weather
im currently working out in greendale near hororata, will be there tomorrow aswel so be interesting to see how it shapes up again. friday iv been eyeing up all week as the best bet for storms in canterbury.
Didnt take much notice of today but TCU was visable from lunch time, as it formed over the foothill areas, was rather ominious when it turnd into a storm.
No photos at all as i was working and didnt have my camera on me anyway, oh well

General September Weather
Got strange hail here at the Tuakau bridge over the Waikato river. Quite soft and breaking up on the windscreen.

Re: General September Weather
Just had a nasty little squall pass over here in Glenfield/Bayview. Small hail and some really strong wind gusts - I don't have an accurate anemometer but would guess by the way the house creaked that they were up over 80kmph. It was all over in a matter of minutes and now back to fitful showers.

Re: General September Weather
For some reason NZ Herald has an article about thunderstorms and hail expected for Auckland today?
Yet the Metservice thunderstorm outlook only showing low risk for this evening/tonight

Chch Storm from yesterday. My photo's while driving. The last one I saw on the net this morning over Brighton - kinda skeptical about that photo I don't recall it being that good over my place.

For some reason the media have got hold of a story that is unrepresentative of today's weather.David wrote:For some reason NZ Herald has an article about thunderstorms and hail expected for Auckland today?

There is a robust shortwave coming in tonight but it is starved of instability and capable of only isolated strikes in the west by the looks.

That story was written earlier this morn. Last night MS had a moderate risk for Akld today, but that was downgraded in this morn's update. Their Severe Weather Watch for severe SW gales last night and early this morn has also been dropped.David wrote:For some reason NZ Herald has an article about thunderstorms and hail expected for Auckland today?

That last pic was taken by Rob Dickinson from New Brighton 3 years ago (see link here and here)petem8nz wrote:Chch Storm from yesterday. My photo's while driving. Re: General September Weather
Yesterday's change very typical of what this spring should produce being el nino, another chance later today although not as good as yesterday.
Not as warm at the surface and a lack of moisture but upper air is quite cold plus very strong upper level winds, could be enough to get some weak cells going for a time.
