That last pic was taken by Rob Dickinson from New Brighton 3 years ago (see link here and here)
Was just going to say the same thing...the 2 year anniversary of the Sept quake, we got a supercell with an astounding hail storm, perhaps one of the most amazing electrical storms I have ever seen, certainly outside the Southern Alps

Got woken by a heavy shower rain/hail 11.15pm. 11mm overnight.

Lightning tracker picked up 2 or 3 strikes on Auckland's west coast last night. A strong shortwave but there was not much instability with it. And that will be the end of our so called winter thunderstorm season when you look at the gfs for the next 2 weeks. Looks anticyclonic.

Slightly O.T. but, I see TVNZ's weather presenter, Renee Wright has been making headlines in the UK...

If anyone experiences large hail, grab a sample and put it in the freezer or measure it. The large hail obs are important.

Only 6mm of rain forecast for Canterbury region in the next 2 weeks - I wonder if this is the first signs of El Niño coming into play heading into summer?

We seem to be entering a phase where high pressure dominates thus precip lower. For Canterbury there is a shortwave on Friday.

In a way yes considering even though it could be a very good spring early summer for storms in the region, as we know storms are isolated quite often unless we get heaps of busters then some areas will get more than others.
But I suspect the real dry conditions wont start until January 2016

Drier air over Waikato, dewpoint for Auckland was around 9C under clear skies/ no wind allowed for night cooling and the widespread fog to develop.
Some afternoon cumulus development should lead to some showers later according to GFS.

I can see a wind convergence line now but the shower risk looks like it will be east of here next 2-3 hrs.

Some very very interesting numbers being thrown up by EC and ACCESS this morning for Friday and Saturday for inland Canterbury, anywhere from 20-30cm above 400m is what they are going for 3 days out...

Summer camping season opens down in the Mackenzie country lakes this Saturday and I like many hundreds will be taking the caravan down and setting up the site so the bloody snow can stay away.
