Summer in Christchurch
I'll be visiting Christchurch in December and am wondering how hot are the summer days. Is it necessary to book an air conditioned room?

Hi megi, not sure where in Canada you live but December in Christchurch is pretty much exactly the same temps as a place like Vancouver experiences in June so no, an air conditioned room would not be needed
In fact frosts are not uncommon in December for Christchurch!

Re: Summer in Christchurch
Hope you have a lovely stay
It's usually an average of about 20-21 degrees daily during early summer. Occasionally it will rise above 30 degrees and with an El Nino summer beckoning that is more of a possibility perhaps but airconditioning certainly isn't a must overall.
We have a cool easterly sea breeze that keeps a lid on the temperature often and night time lows are about 11-14 degrees so that's quite cool for summer.
Summers are usually quite dry and December could see an early thunderstorm in the month perhaps.
Hope that helps

Re: Summer in Christchurch
We can get hot air masses off Australia where the odd night in summer it may not go below 23-25deg, the highest low ive had here 130 km north of CHCH is 29deg, that was at the same time when areas northern Melbourne were burnt out 4 or 5 years ago, having no aircon meant a restless night for us.

Re: Summer in Christchurch
Not very good at the moment, some hot days but mostly cold with the easterlies or the southerlies moving through in the morning, spoiling the day.
Some burst of hot weather are likely, when tomorrow might get to 26C, or 32,depending which way you are looking, but with this La Nina, type of El Nino weather, anything is likely to happen?

The easterlies have been disgustingly brisk this year, the best weather has been inland

I can vouch for that Razor, while I see brisk easterlies about Chch often this summer here in Mt Somers the weather has been very good with light winds.
