Re: Cold Snap 18-22 September 2015
Auckland will have too much SW flow today for decent afternoon convection. But north Waikato could get a storm or two/heavy small hail if the day time heating is sufficient.

This arvo will be interesting upper level winds NE, SFC SW turning W, hopefully a clearing occurs after this mucky shower cloud moved in early mid morning....

Just drove under it and there was rain falling plus the cloud base has that green tinge you get with hail.

For Auckland today there has been a lot of cloud cover north of the Manakau Harbour but it has been a quite sunny afternoon over South Auckland, there is a cumulus line down toward the Bombay Hills/Humua Ranges.

The upper level trough is hanging on over the north of the country until the end of the week. Thursday the surface moisture convergence is back in the Waikato and there looks to be a thunder risk. A SE change looks to push north to reach Auckland in the evening.

Warmer and clearer here this morning. Will get some heating this side of the Kaimais, unfortunately any storms will be moving NW through the Waikato looking at the steering winds aloft.Happy chasing over there !

Yes a bit, but nothing like the rest of North Canterbury though.
Ive done a ring round to see whats everyone totals since Saturday
Hanmer 70mm (wednesday evening)
Waiau 65mm (wednesday evening)
Cheviot 55mm (10.00 am Thursday) 87mm for the month,NIWA station
Scargil Valley 27mm (10.00am " " )
My total 11mm 15mm for the month
So still no where enough but at least the drought area has shrunk to areas in a direct line west of Waipara to Culverden, east of there are in better shape

After seeing how much water is in the streams in and around Waipara yesterday the area that is still dry is more north from about Waikari to Culverden and west to the foothills, but this area can get big dumps of NW rain this time of year so maybe thats what we can hope for.

Doesn't look likely with the present weather scenario, with these persistent lows coming out of the Tasman Sea moving eastward in this QBO El Nino non periodRichard wrote:but this area can get big dumps of NW rain this time of year so maybe thats what we can hope for.
