A fairly dry October for most, apart from the south and west of the South Island. Also a relatively warm month in general, especially earlier on for most of the South Island. Sunshine slightly below normal for Auckland and Hamilton, but mostly sunny elsewhere...

A few notable Oct daily temps around the 7th included 32C in Kaikoura, 31C in Wairoa, 30C in Christchurch, and 29C in Dunedin and Timaru.

Avg temp: 12.3°C
Avg Minimum: 5.4°C
Avg Maximum: 20.0°C
Minimum temp: 1.2°C on 9th
Maximum temp: 29.7°C on 6th
Rainfall: 15mm (8 days of rain, 10mm on 27th) YTD 189mm (not complete as recording didn't start at start of year)

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'October National Climate Summary'.

A dry month for most and warm for the eastern South Island.


The national average temp of 12.7C was 0.6C above normal.

The month's highest temp of 31.8C was recorded at Kaikoura on the 7th, and the lowest of -3.7C was recorded at Pukaki Aero on the 26th.

Notable low rainfalls included just 6mm for Blenheim and 10mm for Taupo. In contrast, Milford Sound recorded 902mm, 291mm of which fell on the 16th.

Note that Dunedin, Musselburgh figures haven't yet been updated.
