Re: Damaging winds 4/10/2015
wind picking up again in far south and Dunedin Airport gusting to 105kmh
so still a chance for other areas to get the gales
(its a hit and miss thing the NWer who gets them (apart from the certain places that get them every time, like Coastal Wairarapa)
Le Bons bay Banks Penininsular also ramping up big time now...thats where you CHCH guys need to head to...

Le Bons tends to get hit harder earlier on with these NW events.Manukau heads obs wrote:wind picking up again in far south and Dunedin Airport gusting to 105kmh

Re: Damaging winds 4/10/2015
I see that flights to Queenstown have been diverted or cancelled due to the weather.
Biggest gust of the year recorded by my station of 73km/h at 15:45 with the anemometer at 5m agl and its bearings failing... Eased off a lot since then.

Very dusty here, yuck.
Sky just a sea of dust.
Strong winds but not as hammering as the Big Blow of 2013.

Re: Damaging winds 4/10/2015
They got 70kts (130kmh) at Invercargill Airport ...as you predicted NZStorm
Ashburton gusts to 60kts too
30kts here even , when it was not supposed to get windy here...

Gusty but nothing to write home about. Certainly got the dust storm up high. Just back from running 30km of Port Hills, no major wind to speak of until the end. Even then its nothing a Wellingtonian would get out of bed for

Been very strong gusts most of the day here. The sea is looking impressive. Can see the sea spray from the other side of town. 22 and sunny here currently but only 7 degrees and wet in Invercargill.

Re: Damaging winds 4/10/2015
We lost power here too for about an hour but it's back on for how long?
Still blowing like 40 illegitimate children at the moment but the wind is constant without huge gusts in between, like in 2013.
...anyway, all the dust has cleared away to the east.
Just talking to a fellow who was driving over the Rakaia Bridge this afternoon, said that he couldn't see the other end of the bridge for dust from the riverbed.

Re: Damaging winds 4/10/2015
We had a wicked thunderstorm blow through here on the arrival of the southerly. Strongest wind I've ever seen and lots of CGs. Seen a car crashed off a road and have a tree over the driveway.

Back from being up behind Kennedys Bush. Clearly they don't cop it as bad as other spots on the Port Hills as I only recorded a top gust if 82kmph. Many its my anemometer? But I have a pretty good one... Will choose a more exposured location next strong NW
