27.4 here now, and 28 in Timaru. Not sure on records...cue RWood
I understand 30.1 is the ChCh October record, but of course we are very early in the month?

Will have a look this evening - from memory the November record is 92.8F/33.8C at Ashburton 1958, wouldn't expect Oct record to be much past 31C.

A new October record of 29.1C for my station in a light E wind with thickening high cloud. Previous record was 27.3C on 6th Oct 2013.

I found a reading of 89.3F/31.8C for Hastings on 22 October, 1961. It was an exceptionally warm and dry month almost everywhere, especially in the east.

Re the earlier November comment, I think Hastings managed 93.? F in November 1949 - haven't checked.

25.2C in timaru at 4am is just amazing.
Over night low of 21C here and 23 C currently.

Edit. I see its 27C on an official NZTA station in cooptown at 4.30am!

Looking like a stunning day for Auckland today and not much precip with tomorrows front.

Bay of Plenty may just catch an isolated thunderstorm later tomorrow.

Thought I would split the thread out as its entirely possible some record temperatures will go today. Already 27 here in Christchurch

We got to 30.2C yesterday. Overnight low was 19.3C, currently 24C with a strong to gale NW blowing. Winds a little cooler than the last lot so I don't think we will get much warmer

Knocking on the door of 29 here now, with the breeze up from the NW and sun out.

30.1 is the Cliflo Christchurch October record I have seen, but unsure which station

We've dropped back a degree or two in ChCh but Kaikoura has slammed its way past 30 I see on the Metservice page

Disturbing to hear news of fires out of control already, so early in the season

But that Kaikoura site is no where up to WMO standards, any temperature it shouldn't be recognized as a record.

A fair screaming gale here now

Yea we have a big fire on the outskirts of Dunedin and houses evacuated. Stinks of smoke from home about 10km from the fire. Southerly passed through about 3.30pm. Dropped 13 degrees so far.

EDIT: Two houses burning now. Not sure if the southerly will worsen things but hopefully no more houses catch fire.

Terrible news re the fires. Just been running up the Port Hills, the wind up there this evening is worse than Sundays blow, went past quite a few tree falls coming down through Cashmere

I thought the wind seemed worse here today than on Sunday.
It was very strong - car-boot lid slammed, had difficulty opening driver's door - from around 11.45am.
There was a ferocious gust shortly after 4pm that seemed to briefly rock the house. 8-o
A great shame that homes have been lost to fire.

Wind hasn't been as strong as Sunday here, although I think it may of been sustained at a higher average for longer than Sunday will have to compare days later.

Todays max average: 59.8km/h WNW @ 5.48pm
Todays max gustspeed: 75.9km/h N @ 11.16am
