What exactly is wrong with it?Richard wrote:But that Kaikoura site is no where up to WMO standards, any temperature it shouldn't be recognized as a record.

Was very windy in the Riccarton/Ilam area around 6.30pm, made cycling difficult. Seemed similar or possibly stronger than Sunday's winds. Still some decent gusts coming through now, but not as strong as earlier.

Its situated below a north facing limestone bank in the main retail area as well as being surrounded by concrete and bitumen. This gouge records about two deg higher than at the airport 2kms south, which is still by the sea there for means it gives a more accurate temp for the area.David wrote:What exactly is wrong with it?Richard wrote:But that Kaikoura site is no where up to WMO standards, any temperature it shouldn't be recognized as a record.

David is right.
The airport recorded the high of 32 and according to Metservice, the AWS for Kaikoura is located on the Peninsula.

Kaikoura is very bimodal in the extremes sense - some of the lowest highs in S/SE conditions, and some of the highest ones in NW ones. Interesting that on 7/2/1973 it didn't get anywhere near the 37-42 readings many other places had - only around the 28C mark from memory.

Never forget that day,the NW flow was light in Rangiora, needs to be a moderate to strong flow to reach KaikouraRWood wrote:Kaikoura is very bimodal in the extremes sense - some of the lowest highs in S/SE conditions, and some of the highest ones in NW ones. I got the impression from maps from that day that the flow was nearer westerly than for a typical NWer - can anyone confirm that?

Re: Unusually warm October spell 6-7 October 2015
I will post the 850mb temperatures just for the record.
We don't often see airmass this warm in summer, so it is exceptional in spring. An exceptional jet stream dragged the warm air across from Western Australia.
This chart is for 6am Wednesday.
