Best pm thunder setup for a while. Looks like the cloud will clear early[for a change] with some heating and convergence later.Western Waikato looks best. Had about 3 mm this morning. Will be gone by lunchtime.

Re: General November Weather
Yes, possible the best looking 500mb trough in a while. But the tropopause is low so convection low topped (5.5km). Looking like pm shower development from Waitomo to Auckland with small hail on the cards given chilly airmass. And the steepest lapse rates are south of Huntly and that's were a few rumbles thunder possible. Looking for a SW to converge with a SE change.treetop wrote:Best pm thunder setup for a while. Re: General November Weather
A couple of days last year [same time] had thunder /low topped convection. The second day one storm managed to break through and delivered some decent hail at Mt Maunganui/orchards damaged.Kaimais/Mamakus may provide enough lift .We want rain near the coast not in the hills though !.

Yes, in theory cb tops only need to reach -20C for lightning to be possible. The -20C hieght is under 5km today.treetop wrote:A couple of days last year [same time] had thunder /low topped convection. !.

Re: General November Weather
Sunny 20C with dp13C here with SW breeze. Good surface conditions in place for the incoming polar trough!

General November Weather
Some interesting cloud bases around South Auckland like this one taken just now at Bombay looking towards Auckland. Lots of fast rising skud bases to the showers.
It was awesome development at Otaua this morning at 11.30. Lots of rapid rising skud and big fat drops of rain. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: General November Weather
It's gone calm in Howick, must be on the edge of the convergence zone... though all the action still remains east of here.

Re: General November Weather
Very active out this way since about mid-arvo. Had one very near loud clap at 3:59pm, and still getting plenty of distant rumbles out east… 4.5mm so far, although it seems to have eased now.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Rural South Auckland:
http://cdem.co/viewer.jsp?token=pVGX2S5s
"MetService have advised that localised heavy downpours are possible in rural parts of South Auckland over the next two hours.
Thunderstorms have developed this afternoon about the southeast of Aucklandand are slow moving and producing heavy rain with hourly intensities of 10 to 25mm/hr and hail 10-20mm in diameter.
Additionally, because of the slow moving nature of the storms there is a potential for localised downpours with intensities of 25 to 35mm/hr in these areas and also across the Firth of Thames to western areas of the Coromandel Peninsula from late this afternoon and into the evening.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain..."
