I've been in the Mt Cook/McKenzie area this week, cycling. Wind has got up a bit this afternoon but no different to most of this week. Wondering if the severe wind warned about is still coming, it's fizzed or this area does not cop it so much.

The new NIWA Medbury station has now been up & running for the last 24 Hours, the 30cm Soil Moisture has been interesting it started off at 30 % but has dropped to 21.2% at 7.20pm, was told it will settle down over time but i wonder how much lower will it go.

A brilliant scarlet sunrise this morning, and a big golden moon descending to the opposite horizon.

Minimum temp of 22 overnight. Not much sleep! I wonder if that is some kind of record?

Hmm… looks like we may have also lost the Weatherzone NZ rain-radars... :(

Had some fog roll over the hills here around sunset yesterday, which was kinda weird.

Looks like there is some decent rain falling in south Canterbury by looking at the radar. Hopefully this can continue right up to Marlborough.

Sounds like you folk need it!

Rain began here about 9:30am, sounds very pleasant right now and there's a wonderful "fresh" smell to the air :)

Southerly has hit here with a sudden burst of heavy rain, very big drops and the odd hail stone.
Very unstable all of a sudden, some big TCU pushing up maybe a storm over the penninsula soon.
Shower was enough to wet the ground, just big spots now
Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms

Currently in Balclutha this morning with a shower going over atm. Yesterday i drove through heavy rain just before Dunedin, pulled over on the south side of the shower to check out the cloud formations and was treated to a few claps of thunder, so that made my day.

We have tropical weather in Auckland today but we are not boarding up the windows!

Brief heavy showers overnight with 18mm here, more heavy showers today. Front due to pass late afternoon. Tomorrows weather looks blue dome but we may see showers return Monday.

Bradley wrote:Tony what do you put the huge difference in what the models are forecasting for tomorrow's rain down to? EC is going for 10-20mm for most of mid-Canterbury but GFS and ACCESS only have 1-2mm and it's been that way for a few days now. In your experience does EC usually forecast NE or NW rainfall pretty well?
Probably easiest to answer this one late tomorrow, after its all over! :B

I dont really know the answers to those questions, I have never been impressed with any model's ability to forecast NW spill over rain accurately but this is maybe not so much of a spill over situation, but a weak trough on the front, so lets see what happens.
Not sure that I can add much to this after the event, but I guess if you live in South Canterbury you'd be very happy with the EC model, and if you live in North Canterbury you'd be much happier with the GFS. Could easily have been the other way around. Just goes to show, neither model is that flash for this type of event. In forecasting terms, best to keep your options open.
