Re: General December Weather
Yes wensday and thurs almost look warmer then last week, we'll see.. just like the thunderstorms nothing "thunderious" has accoured "yet" cooler Southwesterlys end of week into next week, keep eye on tuesday next week to, will be thunderstorms if that cold upper trough makes its way up as its suggesting " at this stage" Very cold air aloft tuesday!!NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:A hot week to start off December.

Re: General December Weather
Soil moisture at 10 cm here is currently at 17.8%, in Feb Cheviot it got as low as 18% but at 23% at present, so, very dry and set to get a lot dryer yet.

I really can't see this horrible NE letting go today, the forecast maximum of 25 degrees looks to be woefully optimistic

Re: General December Weather
Been such a humid day here with a northerly that turned more NW during the afternoon, not sure what the temp was as the weather station has a few teething problems, but nearby Waiau showed 28deg

Re: General December Weather
Beautiful mild start in Christchurch today. Should get into 30 today. I'm not sure why the weather has been so boring this spring. No thunderstorms at all.. it's been a very high dominated spring with a lot of these upper troughs moving offshore. The models are a tease with having things look promising but then changing for the worse and pushing it out east. Frustrating to say the least! !

Re: General December Weather
Frustrating alright, another thing frustrating is seeing a heavy shower in and around Hamner at the moment looks like it will just miss coming this way

Re: General December Weather
Might be worth exploring what some December records are, although I don't expect the ChCh Airport record is under threat at all (35.4)matttbs wrote:Already pushing 32 here

Re: General December Weather
Hmmm yes 33 here too, maybe might have to eat my words on that ChCh record December temp...certainly not much in the way of cloud cover to hold us back, just depends on wind direction from here on inBradley wrote:Airport has had a maximum of 32.9C so far, never been this hot before this early in December!

Re: General December Weather
Thankfully we had thick high cloud all day which kept the temps down, even 2mm of rain this morning that was so refreshing.

Re: General December Weather
That's a scorcher! The 850mb is 14 to 15C which is in the typical range for a Canterbury NW in December. The hot day in October has 850mb temps up to 19C.Bradley wrote:Airport has had a maximum of 32.9C so far, never been this hot before this early in December!

Re: General December Weather
Chch Aero's 32.9C yesterday is its 3rd highest Dec daily max-temp since records began in 1953, although 2010 and 2007 came close with 32.8C.

A welcomed shower this morning, unforecasted (if that's even a word) as far as I can tell.

Re: General December Weather
Tasman sea temps are now really creeping up where all the colder than normal anomalies have disappeared, only to the east do they remain, if winds continual blowing from the westerly quarter these colder waters shouldn't effect our temps too much, but one would expect these winds to keep warming as they have over the last few days thanks to a warming Tasman.

Re: General December Weather
The warmer than normal SSTs should invigorate the troughs as they move across the western Tasman, so we might see some big rainfalls on the west coast in the next month or two.
