Re: General December Weather
All the data is pointing to Monday being another 2-3C hotter then the 2/12 event which peaked at 33C in Christchurch so the December record of 35C is under real threat...

Especially if the reading is taken from NIWA's Riccarton site!Bradley wrote:All the data is pointing to Monday being another 2-3C hotter then the 2/12 event which peaked at 33C in Christchurch so the December record of 35C is under real threat...

Haha yep true - if it's broken at the airport though I guess we'll have to take that one at face value

Re: General December Weather
A quick snap of forecast 850hPa temperatures at 4PM on Monday. Looks worryingly like a strong low level inversion at Wellington and probably enhanced ghastly northerlies.

Re: General December Weather
Anyone have an idea what the all-time hottest December temp is for New Zealand? Or even where to find those kind of records?

Re: General December Weather
I've looked in CliFlo in the past and can't see any way to get extreme records except on a by-station basis. Nev probably knows a way to get this info. I suspectBradley wrote:Anyone have an idea what the all-time hottest December temp is for New Zealand? Or even where to find those kind of records?

Re: General December Weather
Thanks RWood, that's exactly what I thought, I have extensive Christchurch records but none for New Zealand wide, times like this I am really disappointed that NIWA hasn't made its records as easy to search as Aussie's BOM...

Re: General December Weather
I see The Press is now going to CWU for expert opinion on forecasts 'Isolated temperatures could rise as high as 35 degrees, said Russell Voice of Canterbury Weather Updates, which would make it the hottest day of the year'

Re: General December Weather
Chances are the long term December record will be in Canterbury. I see there was a 36.9C at Lincoln, don't know the date.Bradley wrote:Thanks RWood, that's exactly what I thought, I have extensive Christchurch records but none for New Zealand wide, times like this I am really disappointed that NIWA hasn't made its records as easy to search as Aussie's BOM...

The easterly here is the pits. I'd dearly love to never have to feel it ever again.

Re: General December Weather
Not exactly sure but, according to the NZ Herald, Gisborne apparently recorded NZ's highest Dec temp of 37.2C in 1907. In more recent times, Darfield recorded 36.5C on Dec 31, 2002.RWood wrote:I've looked in CliFlo in the past and can't see any way to get extreme records except on a by-station basis. Yes, the 36.9C was recorded at Lincoln on Dec 29, 1886, so possibly at little suspect?NZstorm wrote:I see there was a 36.9C at Lincoln, don't know the date.
Its 2nd highest was 34.3C on Dec 17th, 1907.

Re: General December Weather
A while back someone went through all the Lincoln data pretty carefully (it might have been Stuart Larsen, who worked with Neill Cherry, and who still works at Lincoln) so if that reading still exists in the database then it probably isn't "a little suspect" just because of its age.Nev wrote:Yes, the 36.9C was recorded at Lincoln on Dec 29, 1886, so possibly at little suspect?NZstorm wrote:I see there was a 36.9C at Lincoln, don't know the date.

Re: General December Weather
Is this warmth due to a one day opening for hot air to come from straya? It seems like a bit of a tease.
