Few rumbles and a bit of hail here. Better storm incoming now though.

Hail up to about 2cm in Riccarton, mostly 1-1.5 though, decent lightning show beforehand, the upward cloud motions on the leading edge were cool to see

Sheeet. That was wild in Hornby, it was one heck of a squall. It looked greenish and there were numerous CGs and cannon thunder hitting around us. The hail was as Karliosis described. My poor Cherries. I'm not happy.

It may have be a Supercell. Its certainly was/is a slow mover. I was willing it to go away because of my crops but it just would not budge. It kept on heaving down.Razor wrote:Getting mightily smashed here. Supercell?
Oh and did metservice put a Severe warning on it at any point? It was the most severe protracted largish rain/hail downpour I've ever seen.

Temperature is down to 6.5c at the airport, I imagine due to the hail!

I'd be gobsmacked if that wasn't upgraded to a warning. Epic, and still crashing and banging away overhead here after a solid 15 mins of large hail. Continuous thunder and lightning since 12pm. No need to chase today, this one came knocking!

Chasing with jase and Steve. Only cell going now near the city is the one north towards chch. Good hail from the big cell that tracked over chch city. Will see wat this one does untill the next big belt comes in. "Should there be one"

Intercepted the big hail cell in Wigram and hid under a motorway overpass while the hail passed through. Now in Kaiapoi watching north also.

Good call Mike. It just didn't feel right to me, but there you go, the numbers usually win in the long run.mikestormchaser wrote:Well I think it's safe to say it could be a high risk for thunderstorms for canterbury tomorrow with a low risk of severe thunderstorms.models have been consistently showing this and with a nice pool of moisture with it! Just need a nice sunny start really and things should happen.

Drove out past Rolleston on Wards Rd and had to move when heavy rain then hail arrived. Saw quite a few CGs but not great contrast with the bright sky behind me. Got home to bad surface flooding in Templeton with hail a couple of cm deep, more in "drifts".

Remarkable photos!
Currently raining again here, and thunder growling from yet another patch of red on the rain-radar.

Look at that angry patch at the Rangitata River. Surely it can't make it to here and wreck my garden some more?

Re: December 13th thunder/hail E/South Island!!
Back home from work where it absolutely pelted down in Halswell with some big booming cannon sounding thunder. Only saw sheet lightning as it passed over. Hail pea size but lots of it and a bit mushy.
I did upgrade my NZThSPS to 1 this morning, with a NZThSPS3 for severe thunderstorms but was unavailable to put it up on here.
There may be some more this afternoon.

Severe thunderstorm warning now for the storm heading more or less towards Ashburton. Starting to warm up a bit again here, still some hail on the ground.

Including the risk of Tornado formation!Karliosis wrote:Severe thunderstorm warning now for the storm heading more or less towards Ashburton. Starting to warm up a bit again here, still some hail on the ground.
This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
ASHBURTON.
At 03:15 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near HINDS and LOWCLIFFE.
These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast, and are expected to lie near ASHBURTON, WINCHMORE and TINWALD at 03:45 pm and near ASHBURTON, CHERTSEY and DROMORE at 04:15 pm.
These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain, large hail and possible tornadoes.
Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, and make driving conditions hazardous.
Tornadoes can blow out windows, lift roofs, break large branches off trees, generate dangerous flying debris and blow vehicles off the road.
