Look at how the NWer has failed to penetrate through to ground level in Blenheim. They're still 25 odd.

Blenheim still only 26C with easterly breeze. If the NW arrives too late Met's forecast will be well off the mark.

29.4c in the western bays, our temps always have a big variation against a taupo forecast, but we are at a higher altitude and very sheltered from anything other than a north west-north east flow.

Well both my station and a very good one down the road and my car that's been under trees all day all said 40C at on point here in Rangiora but hey what would we know, people outside the area always know best aye.

Yes it will be interesting to see the final official washup on today. Given ChCh Aero has touched on 36, 4 degrees more than Botanic Gardens, it is not unreasonable to believe that 40 could have been nudged somewhere.

I certainly noticed a substantial difference between leaving Rolleston at the unofficial 38 to arriving back in town, NW breeze very prominent in Rolly, but NE still puffing through town.

Topped out at 32deg here,we were at Ashworth Beach till 2.00pm where it felt warmer than here, so would say 35-36deg at least down there.

Here is the list for Chch Airport, record started in 1953

Dec-75 35.4
Dec-94 33.5
Dec-10 32.8
Dec-07 32.8
Dec-62 32.6

So 1975 was the previous hottest day at the airport, and looks like (based on the graph above) remains the record for the Gardens. Interesting that back then both Gardens and Airport recorded almost identical temperatures, yet this time around the Airport is markedly warmer then the Gardens. Over the the last 40 years there has been a lot more development at the Airport which would tend to raise temperatures there, while the Gardens site has become more closed in with tree growth (tending to make it cooler).

36.1 would also be the third warmest day (in any month) recorded at the Airport. Only February 1973 (the infamous 40+ day) and February 1982 were warmer.

And yet it's only 19 at the beach with a south-easterly

I was working by the airport today and was nice to have a hot day without the gusty stuff and clear skies :B

See my note above re the easterly today, it was noticeably cooler in town compared to Rolleston, which like the airport has been far enough inland to avoid the sea breeze today. A notably hot NW breeze out there. The NW has not made to the CBD town today, must have been right on the boundary. I note its struggled to reach even 20 at New Brighton today. Quite a remarkable differential
