A notably hot NW breeze out there. The NW has not made to the CBD town today, must have been right on the boundary. I note its struggled to reach even 20 at New Brighton today. Quite a remarkable differential
Thank you for that clarification, which explains why the Botanic Gardens didn't get as high as the airport.

That difference is very common in Sydney between western Sydney and costal Sydney. Can often be 35 out west and 22 on the cost.

To me a good indicator if the temperature was around 39c to 40C, is tar melting on the roads or atleast the smell of it which i didnt see today even in Rolleston.
36C to 37C sounds about right id say, interesting the temperatures hovered around 32C until 3:30pm in Hornby when it shot up to 36C so the fohn affect really dragging those heat pockets around.
Back to a more easy comfortable temperature tomorrow, currently 24c as of 11pm.

Having experienced different heats around the world, I find today's to be very comfortable. Dewpoint below 15c, humidity between 30-40%. Tbh I wish this was the norm...

Below are some temps from NIWA and MS, with Leeston taking top-spot.

Note that Chch Aero's revised 36.0C is still warmer than the Lincoln, Riccarton or Gardens sites (the latter to be confirmed), whereas Timaru, Dunedin and Oamaru city/towns were warmer than the airports.
Also note that Ashburton Aero would be its 2nd highest Dec temp if the nearby longterm township's records were included (this month's township figures pending...).

MS's website and NIWA's Cliflo data both showed 36.0C for Chch Aero, rather than the 36.1C initially reported. Possibly just a rounding issue if it's not quite 0.05 of a degree?

Do MS issue heat warnings...I'm sure met office do in the UK.
