30.4°c peak in Swanson. Good to find some shade in a breeze for relief!

Could see cumulus towers and Cb go up over Northland again today after 4pm, kaikohe got 14mm. kaikohe tends to be under the seabreeze convergence on light wind days.

Cooler weather arrives onto the South Island by mid week and moves north but I see the GFS has it struggling to reach Auckland, may stay warm and humid here right through next week.

Spitty rain in Akaroa on and off since last evening, which must mean significant spillover from the Southern Alps and West Coast already.

No idea what the actual temp is here in Hamilton but I reckon my beer is mostly evaporating before it reaches my mouth. Have just been watching a wee dust devil cross an empty paddock behind the house and dance through the crop field next door. Good viewing!

The airport, which is the most conservative of local sites hit 29.9 at 3:30pm. It actually does not break 30 all that often considering 28-29C is not uncommon. Today is indeed a slightly hotter day than the normal hottest handful of days per summer. Normally a Westerly of some sort arrives by now and caps the temp. Over here in Cambridge the Westerly takes ~1h longer to make it in, suspect an official site around here if there were one would break 30 more often.

My suburb can be in the zone between the northeast and southwest seabreeze, light winds adding to the hot feel, almost calm here just now

I see over at Greylynn they had a northeast sea breeze from late morning, max there of 29.7C late morning.

I sometimes wonder if metservice should issue special public swell warnings for situations like the last few days..
It's the weekend, fine and very hot days, light winds, busiest Beach days recorded this year
Add in an unusually large long period swell from Tc victor, that's been pushing in for days along the usually calm east coast from cape reianga to gisborne...
Even after growing up around the ocean, I'm always very careful on the west coast,on isolated beaches I wont even go more than waist deep on a calm day.
But I could see how 3 people (including a lifeguard) drowned in that area over weekend after being caught out.

Up to 30.1 today at home. I was lucky enough to have been at kuratau lake Taupo again for the weekend so arrived home at a slightly better 28. Much more muggy heat here than down there. Got to 30 there yesterday but it reminded me of a dry Aussie heat with a very warm SW breeze.

Still sitting on 23.5 at the moment.

Looking likely that there's going to be more rain for northern areas of Canterbury again, what an unbelievable summer its turning out to be, really has totally gone against what the climatology experts were predicting.

3 of the last 4 days here have been very cloudy here - January is turning out to be very much inferior to December.

If you look at rainfall patterns in past El Nino summer seasons, there's a clear bias to drier than average conditions in the north and east of the NI, and wetter than average in the west and south of the SI. Elsewhere things are more equivocal.

However if just some of the strongest few El Ninos from the past (1972/3, 1982/3, 1997/8) are considered, then the outlook used makes some sense. This one is looking different.

It was rather humid for Christchurch this morning. It was over 28 degrees with a 15 degree dewpoint at one point which is unusual if I recall. Currently 31.4 @ Jeffs. Actually feels hot even tho I recently spent 3 months in South East Asia and have lived in Melbourne for 6 years.

Blimey, 27.3°C with a 20.9°C DP, very ripe!
Wouldnt be surprised if we get a good shower later on if that DP keeps up!
