Many farms received 20-30 millimetres by Thursday morning with some Hawarden farmers in the hard-hit Hurunui district adding the January total so far to 130mm - 22 times more than the same month a year ago and more than they got for all of last year.

Re: General January Weather
Seems like today should not have been as warm in upper NI but still nudged 29C. Airflow looks like it is coming from the Southern Ocean.

The warm weather has been great, looks like we will keep the general warm humid trend through next week.

The last 1/3 of the month here has been abysmally cloudy, to the point where the monthly sun will be close to a record low in 89 years of Kelburn data. Local "lore" has it that "Always gets better around about Anniversary weekend" - in this case, couldn't be further off the mark.

Should be a rather cloudy month for Canterbury as there hasn't been much sun shine with the last 5 days have seen bugger all sunshine.

It has been the worst summer ever here for vegetable gardening. The grass grows well but that's it.

Yes, mowed the ruddy lawns today, and the tomatoes are not looking all that good.dogmelon wrote:It has been the worst summer ever here for vegetable gardening. The grass grows well but that's it.
Also today, noticed mushrooms growing in damp places around this selected house.

Re: General January Weather
112.9mm of rain here for the month which makes it the wettest January we have experienced here.
Sunshine hours will be down because of the days of low cloud and clagg hanging around.

Where are you based? Our vege gardern is going gangbusters in Cracroft! The moisture and a larger than normal number of 30+ degree days in between have been fantastic for vege growth for usdogmelon wrote:It has been the worst summer ever here for vegetable gardening. Re: General January Weather
In contrast to December, January 2016 was generally a warm, wet and cloudy month, apart from notably cooler than normal temps for the east and south of the South Island.
Some very preliminary January 2016 figures for the main centres:
Note that there was the odd isolated downpour in South Auckland where readings are taken. The last day also saw an isolated downpour in Ruakura, Hamilton, whereas Hamilton Aero remained dry.

Also worth noting that Ricky's Grey Lynn daily max of 29.7C on the 24th and 29.6C on the 23rd just pipped his previous all time record of 29.5C set in Feb 2015 in over 12 years of records...NZstorm wrote:Grey Lynn averaged min 16.7C to max 25.3C with 114mm.

Re: General January Weather
I suspect more records will be broken this year, as heat in the pacific ocean from (now slowly fading) El Nino keeps on trickling into the atmosphere/global weather patterns, etc
There are people though who still don't want to believe anything is happening..and think the data is all manipulated (sometimes it has been...but there are valid reasons why (station location changed for example)
...and if it hasa changed..then oh....its a natural cycle...
the biggest problem is the speed of change...nature is not all that fast at adapting...
