The cell over Maramarua is active. The one over Karaka is not active....yet.

http://cdem.co/viewer.jsp?alertId=116 which reads
The MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning which affects the following local government areas:
AUCKLAND CITY, WAIKATO and FRANKLIN.
At 01:45 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near PUKEKOHE, DRURY, BOMBAY, ARARIMU, POKENO, MARAMARUA, MANGATAWHIRI and MERCER.
These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the northnorthwest, and are expected to lie near PAPAKURA, HUNUA, MANUKAU, DRURY, ARARIMU, POKENO, MARAMARUA, BOMBAY, MANGATAWHIRI, MERCER and ARARIMU at 02:15 pm and near AUCKLAND, PAPAKURA, HOWICK, HUNUA, MANUKAU, SOUTH AUCKLAND, POKENO, HUNUA, DRURY, BOMBAY, MANGATAWHIRI, THE HUNUA RANGES and ARARIMU at 02:45 pm.
These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain and large hail.
Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, and make driving conditions hazardous.
Where thunderstorms form, surface flooding is likely and localised flooding of streams.
Small localised tornadoes can be associated with severe thunderstorms.

The rain radar showing a very intense cell around Pukekohe. Most intense I've seen on the radar for a long time

Massive thunder out here in last ten minutes. And across the Manukau Harbour through the rain I can see Manukau and Puketutu Island bathed in sunshine.

Just let it run over me. Easy 50km winds. Probably a lot more and some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen

Great photo Jamie.
An interesting convection day with cells producing heaps of thunder. And while its been dry in central Auckland just catching a shower now to disrupt the cricket.

Re: Moist and unstable week starting Jan 27th
I see Brian had a peak rainfall intensity of 8.82mm/min. That's crazy stuff!
Some totals i have heard.
40mm in very short period and with hail at Waiau Pa
65mm in 45mins at Patumahoe
40mm between Hamilton and Morrinsville with branches down (from that cell i was on)
