Things are developing on the lee side of anything with a high altitude (kaimais and Ruapehu) judging by the radar

Some tropical air showing up on GFS in the north early Feb, possible overnight lows 20-22C around 4-7 Feb! Though it is still a week out.

MetService YourWeather is showing some nice heat and converging winds. Its only a matter of time for something decent to fire.

I'm in North Waikato. I have been hearing thunder from a nice looking Cb near Te Aroa but it is in the Ranges

Nice one shovelopikis.
I have a very nice buildup to my SE. I'm getting tempted to chase. But then you see how far away it is on radar. About an hour away and moving away. Looks much closer than that by the naked eye. Must be a sign of its strength.

Re: Moist and unstable week starting Jan 27th
Looks like a great storm ongoing for a few hours around Taupo, hope to see some photos.
Chase is on the cards for me tomorrow, GFS seems to have spread the instability further south, not a great setup but I will chase pretty much anything.

I headed down to Waikato mid afternoon, watched a storm develop east of Morrinsville late afternoon but it moved into the Kaimai Ranges, a couple of photos.

Re: Moist and unstable week starting Jan 27th
Well done on chasing yesterday spwill.
Sunday still looking like western Waikato to Northland. But timing of shortwave will be a factor.
UKmet has mid level lapse rates upto 7C tomorrow which is a good number to get hail. Northland showing the highest probs tomorrow but have to see how quickly the upper level trough moves.

Moist and unstable week starting Jan 27th
I have a gut feeling about today. I know we are right on the boundary of mod risk but this morning has had all the signs of an unstable day.
The outlook today looks juicy for a few areas today.
