The midday Whenuapai sounding shows a low level cap at the time the balloon was lauched. It looks like once this is broken, vigorous convection will ensue.

Yea the cap is quite obvious here. It has completely clouded over. I was assuming that this cap would be too strong but great to hear that if/when it breaks it will be all on.

Mainly clear and sunny up here, but not much convection at all so far. Humid again with dewpoint 19-20C.

A NE will try to come into Auckland later in the day. Could see convection result near Howick over Hunua.

Can see distant cb to south. Radar has it over Taranaki!

Yes, the convergence has developed over north Auckland and Hunua but no signs of any convective energy yet. A weak shower to the north.

Now that the westerly has calmed down we should see some action weather forming in the eastern Waikato.

Hamilton seems to be under a convergence line atm. Hopefully it stays relatively stationary.

A couple of showers developed as expected but I can't see anything further happening convection wise today in the Auckland region.

Those Ranges behind the Galatea basin seem to be the magical spot for storms to fire it all situations.

You are lucky baresarks in the North Island with this useless El Nino as far as we are considered down here.
Useful the rains have been but HOW MANY THUBNDERSTORMS HAVE WE HAD IN CANTERBURY ??
ZERO
The WEATHER HAS BEEN so boring o_O  8-o
All we get is this effing boring CLAGG
Need more artificial development in the atmosphere, for change to get thunderstorms here ?

Did that "cap" thing hold for today and so many areas didn't get thunderstorms today?

Yes John, it has been the worst summer in some time. I'd like some sunshine for once. My garden is so SLOW.

The eastern high country and Northland looked the prime areas for a storm today and they got storms.

Some weak heat showers north of the city otherwise a fine day.
I drove north to Owera late afternoon, beaches packed up there, some convergence showers up there, photo
