Re: General March Weather
Looks like ChCh Aero has now crossed the 30 mark for the third day running. EDIT that- I think ChCh Aero got 29.7 on Saturday if The Press is correct.Nev wrote:There have been a few Marches where Chch Aero has recorded 2 consecutive days of 30C or more:Bradley wrote:Having a quick look at the long term records Razor I can;t even find 2 days in a row over 30C let alone 3 - remarkable!
31.9C & 31.2C on Mar 10-11, 1990
30.7C & 31.4C on Mar 23-24, 1983
33.3C & 32.8C on Mar 03-04, 1968
31.3C & 30.4C on Mar 09-10, 1959
The years above interest me too 1983 was during an el nino event. 1959 was a mild El Nino event. 1968- this was a month before Cyclone Giselle and the Wahine disaster (tail end of a La Nina?). 1990 tail end of La Nina?

Re: General March Weather
The gfs tends to overcook the instability numbers in the warm air mass/high humidity set ups.
But there will be some instability with localised downpours associated with the rain event on Thursday.

Re: General March Weather
Good photos there Richard.
Why is the photo upside down, in your posting, Moylanr?
Bob Crowder rang me up to say that he heard a few rumbles of thunder this afternoon, just north of his place
I saw the cloud forming on what looked to a bit of a gusto front, on the way home from work. I stopped an watched development, but I didn't think it would of developed into anything but it did, probably because of the moist conditions ahead of it. The wind had been light SW for much of the day, especially when all the low cloud and clagg cleared away.

Re: General March Weather
Interesting to see the colder upper air across the country in the coming days. Could be some hail in Waitomo tomorrow as a strong shortwave crosses. Can't say I have seen an upper level pattern like thiat in a while.

Re: General March Weather
Problem was, as is often the case here was the NW wind pushed it east, storms from the S or SW are rare herespwill wrote:Good photos Richard, there was a good convergent southerly into very moist air.

They drift east in the upper flow, you want low level onshore flow for moisture.Richard wrote:Problem was, as is often the case here was the NW wind pushed it east, storms from the S or SW are rare herespwill wrote:Good photos Richard, there was a good convergent southerly into very moist air.

Re: General March Weather
Tomorrow (Sunday) is a repeat of today at another coldish 500mb trough crossing the North Island.
Seems to be a lack of convergence though tomorrow.
Hawkes Bay and Coromandal Peninsula could see a storm.

Re: General March Weather
A weak Cb form through the haze probably around the Oxford area>?
Slight blob on the Rakaia radar for up there.
Nothing really to get excited about but as the weather here as been so boring here, of recent months, anything like this makes me smile and worth a mention.

A bit of colder upper air across the South Island today which is a sure sign of Autumn.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:A weak Cb form through the haze probably around the Oxford area>?

The shortwave trough crossing the North Island today was about 6 hours too early. You want them timed for late afternoon rather than late morning.
Another fine day for Auckland with temps into the mid 20's.

General March Weather
We had a bright morning this morning. Now fog has descended on us from the west. Thick too. We seem to have had a lot of fog this March.
