Re: General March Weather
Hope so.
Hopefully much more than the few showers rubbish that MetService dishes up with their forecasts of late with a southerly change .

While not strictly a weather article, I would like to see MS do write up something similar on occasions http://hurunui.govt.nz/news-and-views/c ... the-worst/

Re: General March Weather
that article seems to have been written by a veteran firefigher who has probably seen worse
and thinks a fire 9km from a town is no big deal...but for people who coming from out of the area with family etc, it probably is a big deal...and its no biggie for them to change their plans...
ie maybe good to air on the side of caution?
I can see though that it was probably blown out of proportion all right
probably also a good idea to not have lots of nosy parkers tourists getting in the way too?
the author of the article probably also had local business's in his ear....

Re: General March Weather
May get a thunderstorm set up over the upper inland North Island Wednesday afternoon according to 12Z gfs. CAPE 500j/kg.
Will depend on moisture on the day, amount of surface heating and where the surface convergence occurs.

Re: General March Weather
10mm here so far and looks like a few more hours of rain to go as well, if we could get 20mm, that would help get the grass growing again

Re: General March Weather
the Waikato might pick up heavy showers with the wind change later in the day?

Re: General March Weather
Looks like southern Waikato will pick up the convergence showers with some thunder possible as well. Amount of heating and surface dps will govern amount of instability but not hugely unstable.Manukau heads obs wrote:the Waikato might pick up heavy showers with the wind change later in the day?
I see the front gave the EW raingauge near Port Waikato 36mm last night, (23mm in an hr).

Re: General March Weather
Im liking the look of a SE wind change coming through this afternoon early evening.
Could be some quite strong sfc forcing with mid levels remaining fairly unstable. If temps remain favourable pre the change, some storms should fire on the change.
Central Waikato my pick, will keep an eye on radar in the afternoon, any storms/showers should form on a line and head NW.
Should be some good outflow structure if the storms fire on the change

Re: General March Weather
Metservices Thunderstorm Outlook this morning:
Metservice wrote:Warm, humid conditions and sea breezes in many places are likely to lead to the development of showers over the northern half of the North Island. During the afternoon and evening, a southeast wind change should move from east Cape to Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula, likely producing heavy showers.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms about the northern Gisborne ranges and inland eastern Bay of Plenty during the early afternoon, then about the Kaimai/Mamaku ranges, and Waikato in the late afternoon and evening as the southeasterly wind change moves through.
These thunderstorms will be slow-moving producing localised heavy rain. Rainfall rates should mostly be in the 10-25mm/hr range.
A broader low risk of thunderstorms covers areas from Waitomo to Gisborne northwards, as indicated on the chart.
No other thunderstorms or significant convection expected over New Zealand on Wednesday afternoon or evening.

Re: General March Weather
Certainly got the heating for convection over the Waikato today. I see the PWS showing temps up to 25C now with dp 18C.
Can see a weak cb to the south.

Re: General March Weather
A dull cold day in Chch with drizzle until a few hours ago. Like a winter's day, a good coating of snow on Mt Hutt, according to its webcam
