General April Weather
Patchy rain arriving here now for a warm damp start to April.
The pattern ahead looks more westerly than we have seen so far this year, so a better chance of a cool/cold air reaching NZ at times next week or two.

I see they have issued a severe thunderstorm watch for those areas, valid until midday Saturday.David wrote:Metservice has a moderate risk of thunderstorms for north-facing regions tonight & tomorrow AM.

Re: General April Weather
The last two weather systems which were forcasted to deliver around 15-20mm each have come to nothing (apart from Tony who was pretty much spot on). One thing ive learnt about droughts in Canterbury is you know you are in severe drought when rain that is forcasted never arrives, but then there is only two sides to Canterbury weather, wet- or dry, when ya in wet faze it rains flat out when rain is not forecasted.

Yes.
Tomorrow's front could prove useless, here.
When it's mentioned in the forecast, ' a few showers' usually means a dry southerly change, as far as I'm concerned, especially with this current weather scenario..
It would be nice if we got a decent thunderstorm, with a southerly change, but this El Nino has been pretty useless as far as that goes, so bring on La Nina

Re: General April Weather
We need a big upper level system with colder upper air. Models have been playing around with such a system for mid month. Hopefully it comes off.
Looks like a storm or two/possible hail for the Bay of Plenty tomorrow with that S change.

Models have been pointing to a cold system to affect NZ next week, may or may not eventuate but interesting to see it in the modelling.

General March Weather
Got a great display of lightning over East Cape from here. It's incredible how bright it is from here.

Re: General April Weather
A lot of lightning over the eastern Bay of Plenty this afternoon/evening.
GFS had been indicating thunderstorm development in that area due to SE change/left over moisture and upper level divergence within exit region of jet.
500mb temps also cold at -18C.

Re: General April Weather
Some quite big puffy cumulus to the E/SE this evening, and some heavy showers showing on the radar. Caused by the SW/SE convergence maybe?

Yes, a nice convergence line out there, upper level temperatures are rather cold today.
Autumnal for Auckland next couple of days.

METVUW is showing a nice funnel cloud taken from Hamilton yesterday. I'm not surprised there was a funnel. It was that sort of afternoon where you kept an eye out for something like that. We did have some nice afternoon convection going on.

Pleasant breezy sunny day here, a large rainbow halo around the sun, and some interesting lines and curls of high clouds.

Yes, that is a nice funnel pic in the Met View site. http://www.metvuw.com/
April tends to be a good month for funnels when we start getting the colder air masses.
The cloud tops 4km.
