Well it looks like a decent southerly buster has popped up in the models for next week. A wee way out I know, but for the last few days it has been relatively consistent in the fact that some sort of cold change is on the way.
Current data suggests snow to about 400m is Southland, and 500-600m in Canterbury. Relatively decent moisture about too.
Will be interesting to watch this unfold.
First decent southerly blast of 2016?

Doesn't look like much now with high pressure coming in and dominating, sadly.

Looked good last week but doesn't really give much moisture with it. Other then strong cold south to southwest winds and maybe few showers now. Not much in the way of instability with it either.

Re: First decent southerly blast of 2016?
In the end this system was rather interesting, the SW wind change delivered brief rain (15mm), but it produced no snowfall on any of the mountains in North Canterbury, even the highest peaks didn't receives snow, the snow level must have been higher than 1400m
