Re: General May Weather
Dry and overcast here at present, and it seems very dark for the time of day, especially to the west.

Re: General May Weather
Ah, ok. This reader assumed you were just referring to May... Yes, Chch Aero's highest mean T-max for any month is 26.2C in Feb 1998, and it did share its highest Feb mean T-min of 13.2C in 1998 with 1974 and 1954, before recording 13.3C last Feb. Also note that it has recored several higher mean T-mins in January, the highest being 14.3C in 1975.Bradley wrote:I was referring to February 1998 being the only month which has the record for both the highest average maximum AND highest average min as well

Re: General May Weather
Could be a good dump of rain for Canterbury over the coming days. Could be a good 15-20mm tonight alone, followed by 10mm over weekend, and potentially 30mm on Monday.

A colleague has pointed out they're now they're going for 16 mm between 8pm and 10pm this evening. I'm missing Blue Skies...Razor wrote:Metservice has really backed off on the ChCh forecast, only occasional showers forecast over the weekend.

Looks like the edge of the low will just skirt Banks Peninsula tomorrow. I wouldn't expect much rain tonight, maybe a few mm. Tomorrow not much more over most of the Plains, but on the Peninsula and maybe over Chch could see 10-20mm plus some strong winds.

Snow on Mt Peel and Mt Somers looks to be at 4,500ft-5,000ft level.
Strong cold wind in Fairlie at present, tossing tree-branches about and snapping flags.

I am told that the snow level on the hills around Lake Tekapo is down to 900m for now. Very picturesque.

Great image of the two spinning lows over the country today. The animation on the BOM satellite viewer very impressive.

Looking at the GFS outlook it will end up being an active May for thunder in the west of the North Island.

At Mount Cook Village this morning: mix of light drizzle clearing to sunshine, and cloud briefly moving away to enable view of Mt Cook and other snowy peaks. Now light sleet and graupel falling.

Re: General May Weather
All thoughts of those lovely 20°C temps a week or so back seem like a distant memory on days like today. Currently 5.8°C and raining with a gale SW'r blowing. Wind chill of -5.5°C and an apparent temp of -3.5°C.
But it's likely to get colder as Dunedin's sitting on 4.5°C.....
Edit: And yep, 30mins later and we're at 4.6°C and heavy rain.

Re: General May Weather
'Up to 15mm of snow could accumulate near the summit' was the quote from The Press this afternoon in regards to Lindis Pass - wonder if they mean 15cm or are they creating their own weather terminology now in describing snowfall measurements?

Re: General May Weather
Rain intensifying here. So far 14mm for the day by 5mm in the last hour. Could be some nervous home owners around south Dunedin and st Kilda tonight if that rain rate keeps up. Light dusting about mid afternoon right at the top of mt cargill and flagstaff too
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Re: General May Weather
Interesting looking at the radar at the moment. A good lot of moisture moving up the east coast of the south island right now. Cold in many parts too.
