Re: General May Weather
The MS have now backed off on next week's cold event, forecasting snow to 400 m for the south ( were saying 200 yesterday) and 600 for the Canterbury high country

Went up to Porters Pass and Lake Lyndon today, was snowing lightly with about 8cm of snow on the ground, nowhere near as bad as what the Metservice was forecasting!

Re: General May Weather
yes, got windy here too last night, was real gusty
next wave depression has alot of lightning activity
will it hold up?
also it was a very warm night too, 17.5c most of the night, after being up to 20c during the day
making the 24 hours 5c warmer than normal here!

My average got up to over 70 for a bit last night.
May has turned out to be quite the windy month after a very still start. I've had 3 days with gusts above 80km and 2 of those days above 90km.

Re: General May Weather
ps jamie, if you put the template file, climatedata.html
that comes with the install files, into your web files folder, then you will get a better looking output file

Re: General May Weather
Turned out to be a mostly sunny day here yesterday, but blustery winds returned overnight. I think Tiritiri Is. was gusting to a least 93 km/h around 1am this morn, the Waitemata's Bean Rock to a least 87 km/h, and over on the Manukau Heads gusts were around 130 km/h.

Re: General May Weather
Still a fairly decent cold front on Tuesday, snow should lower to around 200m for a time down south going by GFS

Re: General May Weather
About 8pm last night we all of a sudden had a very heavy fall of hail for about 3 minutes. What was so strange was usually when we get hail it looks white, this stuff was 100% see through and it looked more like chunks of broken glass falling, some easily the size of a 20c piece. Never seen anything like it, can anyone share any info?

Re: General May Weather
Depends on how quickly the hailstone's ice layers freeze. Slower freezing allows any trapped air to escape producing clear ice, whereas quick freezing traps the air giving it more of an opaque appearance.SnwAddct wrote:About 8pm last night we all of a sudden had a very heavy fall of hail for about 3 minutes. Re: General May Weather
No thunder here yet in Tauranga. Hail here is often wet and is mixed in with the rain. When its bad its 10-20mm but clear and flat like broken windscreen glass ,I have not seen big "white" dry hail here. . Maybe slower freezing as mentioned earlier is the problem here ? But I am not a hail expert.

Re: General May Weather
I have been watching the thunderstorms approach Auckland from the NW. It seems as though the thunderstorms died out as they hit the coastline. Can anyone explain why they didn't make much ground inland?

That is usually what happens. But I'm not too sure why it happens so often...MadDog wrote:I have been watching the thunderstorms approach Auckland from the NW. It seems as though the thunderstorms died out as they hit the coastline. Can anyone explain why they didn't make much ground inland?
