More thunderstorms and possible tornadoes 20-21 May

Unread post by jamie »

Looks like round three is coming in tonight and tomorrow. Looks a good one.

One thing different with this setup is MS are saying hail up to 20mm which I don't think that they mentioned hail that big for the west coast of the north island for the previous two set ups.

I do remember squally thunderstorms in a cold SWer that hasd hail this time of year way back in the late 80's where I was driving along near home and the hail was like a hammer on the car and actually broke a part off the windscreen wiper..it was all jagged etc..that's the biggest hail I can remember :)

there is a front approaching Taranaki now with some discrete CBs with blown off anvils on the sat map
and which is lightning active and that will be here before the one that is mentioned by midnight?

That satellite animation shows how fast this is all moving. I thought it was hourly images but that's 10 min images!

That is correct, those thunderstorms on the preceding trough are expected about as far north as Waikato this afternoon and early evening, although some heavy showers may still affect Auckland. The main event will be the cold front which is due into Auckland around mignight or shortly after.

HeMan will the preceding storms have any hail or is it likely to be restricted to the cold front storms tonight?

The preceding trough is mostly just heavy rain at the moment, although there may be some small hail in it. Lifted indices are higher with the cold front tonight, and is more likely to have hail.

I'm pretty fresh to all of this. When you refer to the anvils being blown off, is it the jetstream that is doing this? What is the significance of this happening?

Indicates upper level shear which is helpful in hail/ tornado events . Some times in weak events after the main front goes through the lower 1/2 of the CB may be moving from the SW while the upper winds are still NW which in pulsy storms the top half is blown away.I think the main front/low tonight will come in behind and will be a more tightly packed solid feature maybe even a "meso" or two.[thunderstorm/and or groups of them rotating around the low or wind change area].

yes I suspect we will see a nice rapidly rotating low on the radar as we have seen in the past (maybe see 1-2 times per year). Often is the case, there is a tornado reported near the centre of the low when it hits landmass.

I'm, not surprised of weather events around that area with this current weather scenario.
Triple water spouts, well that is a bit extreme. :-k

from Auckland Civil Defence:
http://cdem.co/viewer.jsp?token=6EqbaDHg

"MetService have issued a Watch for SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS across the entire Auckland region tonight. The predicted weather pattern indicates that this will reach the west coast between 10pm to 1am. This may bring heavy but brief showers, thunder and lightning, and also straight line gusts between 90 to 110km/h.
Tomorrow will also be very windy, with a possibility of severe gales forming from the afternoon.
We will revise information in the morning."

The Boltek here is getting around 67 strokes a second atm..... Waveform signatures are quite strong for the CG's.

Cant see anything yet in the west. Raglan reportably getting frequent Thunder atm.
