Certainly looks like it, http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/ne ... wellingtonshovelopikis wrote:Yes big storm here 3am woke everyone in the house up, felt like the house was shaking constantly for 5mins.
Continued High Risk today:
The 06Z GFS has the CVA levels decreasing as the upper shortwave passes through the North Waikato, however with upper level temps being unduly cold and resulting lapse rate fairly good esp on the coast, there should be some scattered lightning in the next few hours.Metservice wrote:An unstable west to northwest flow covers western parts of the North Island and the far north of the South Island during Wednesday, bringing heavy showers and thunderstorms to these areas. Troughs embedded within this flow are expected to cross central and northern New Zealand during the day.
There is a high risk of thunderstorms from Taranaki to Waikato this morning, spreading to Auckland and Northland this afternoon, before easing everywhere tonight. These thunderstorms may be accompanied by localised heavy rain of 10 to 20mm/hr, strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and hail up to 20mm in diameter. In addition, there is a low risk that some of these thunderstorms could be SEVERE,with damaging wind gusts in excess of 110 km/h and large hail.
There is a high risk of thunderstorms this morning and early afternoon for Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and these storms could be accompanied by strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, hail and heavy rain of 10 to 20mm per hour. There is also a high risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening for Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and the far north of Gisborne. These storms could be accompanied by strong wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, hail and heavy rain of 10 to 20mm per hour.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms over much of the remainder of the North Island and far north of the South Island as indicated on the chart, but easing south of Wanganui late afternoon or evening. These storms may be accompanied by strong wind gusts, hail and heavy rain. A broader low risk of thunderstorms extends slightly further east and south as shown on the chart.
Finally, very cold upper temperatures spread onto the far south of the South Island this afternoon and evening, bringing showers with small hail to Fiordland and Stewart Island and a low risk of isolated thunderstorms.
No thunderstorms or significant convection expected elsewhere.
Perhaps not very vigorous convection, but still a storm/thundershower combo.

Ominous lowering of the cloud base just hooned past Mt Eden and now as I type this fairly hefty hail is falling. TS in progress here, bright lightning and booming thunder although not all that frequent.

Im on the train heading west from Auckland City and as the doors opened at New Market there was a huge flash followed by a very loud clap, and looks like hail stones falling now too. Loving the weather at the moment..

Terrible Weather here in Canterbury today, with a lovely fine settled day
Anyone would think that a stationary anticyclone was over the region at about 1036hPa

A fair bit of Thunder in the Waikato today, makes a nice change getting the rumble of thunder almost every other day.
