Cold but warm overnight with it dipping down to 2C then up to 15.2C before dropping back to 11C at 7:30am.
Some rain this morning from a dirty looking NW Arch, which had some strong virga forms on it.
15..8C the maximum for today but down to 11C by 6pm.
Not much wind, as I thought of in some way, a strong ENE would possibly develop, but it didn't.

I can't believe how warm it is outside. 17.4 right now outside in JUNE! It's just weird. My max June temp record of 20.5 could be under threat today if we get enough sun

Unusual overnight June temps here as well....Ashburton's temperature on Metservice's site averaged around 16 for most of the night.

Yeah, might be a few North Island June daily T-max records under threat today.

Hamilton Aero's highest June temps are 20.6C in 2011 and 20.5C in 1998.
And Akld Aero's are 23.8C in 1999 and 21.1C in 2011.

17C with fog here. Looking like the mildest June night since 1998 for Auckland airport.

Eastern North Island looks like being the warm spot today with 23C on the cards.

Looks like Napier and Gisborne Aero's have beaten their 1981 records of 24.3C and 22.9C respectively.

I think Mangere, Akld had its 3rd-equal warmest June night last night with a T-min of 16.3C.

And Ruakura, Hamilton also had its 3rd warmest night for June with a T-min of 15.7C.

Considerably better weather than a cold high this time of year.
Not for me. The recent sunny spell gave us about 50% of the June quota of sun in just 8 days. Somewhat reminded me of the only bearable winter weather I experienced in Invercargill - when for some frostiness a few clear days could be had. Greatly disliked the cloudy norm, especially May-June when cloudiness peaked. I was young at the time but one abysmal spell yielded just 35 hours of sunshine in 30 days ...

In the case of Auckland the partly cloudy weather in Winter brings comfortable temperatures. In the case of Invercargill, the winter weather is generally cold regardless.

I think for winter, the further north you get, the better. Fiji is ideal! But I think Northland gets the best winters in NZ due to the stronger day light/milder temps.

We have unexpected showers in Auckland today. The dewpoint is 15C which is moist enough to spoil the forecast of dry weather.

I'm thinking of cloudier examples. One of your very worst would be June 1979 - very mild, quite wet and abysmally cloudy.

Northland winters are too wet. Epically so in the 1955-1956 La Nina.

How much is the highest temperature ever recorded in June in New Zealand ?
The 25.1C recorded at Napier shouldn't be far from a national record.

Those storms are on the first of 2 cold fronts which will sweep up the South Island tonight/tommorow morning.

The cold front and short subsiquent cold longwave, quite noticable with good temp differentation and good upper level support, resulting in some fairly frequest strong elevated Lightning strikes at present :)

Not exactly sure what the highest ever national temp for June is, but yes, Napier Aero's 25.1C on Friday would probably be right up there.

Hastings recorded its highest ever June temp of 25.4C in 1988, as did Havelock North with 25.2C. And although Kaikoura Peninsular also recorded 24.8C in 1988, a more inland site recorded 25.1C in 1981.

Some areas also recorded one of their warmest ever June nights on Thu/Fri night. Tauranga Aero with a T-min of 16.5C pipped its previous record by 0.2C. And Auckland Aero with 16.4C, Whangarei Aero with 16.3C and with Hamilton Aero with 15.7C, were all just 0.1C shy of their warmest overnight June T-mins.

I see Wellington had an abysmally cloudy Winter that year while Auckland turned brighter July/August. 1979 looked like an interesting year for weather. Personally I would rather have the heavy rain events in my climate zone than continuously dry weather.

1979 was the wettest year on record here (I think I have the year right)
with over 1900 mm (1300 mm is the average)

Indeed 1979 was Wellington's 3rd cloudiest year in over 100 years of city records, after a bright start. Also much wetter than average. The 1979-1983 epoch overall was very cloudy for NZ particularly in the South Island and most particularly in the south and west. Locally the rest of the decade 1984-1990 was a vast improvement.
